58th Omloop van de Westkust - De Panne, Cat 1.5

Belgium, June 24, 1998

Brief:

In a two-man sprint, Kris Gerits beat his fellow breakaway Wim Omloop to win the 58th Omloop... With 40 kms to go, there was a group of 14 riders who were still in the race. The peloton was at more than 5 minutes. West-Vlaams champion Pascal Lievens really bend his back on the climb of the Kemmelberg. Only Vanderaerden, Gerits, the Austrian Buxhofer, Jurgen Van de Walle and Wim Omloop had an answer to the attack from the pupil of Pollentier. With around 20 km to ride, Gerits and Wim Omloop laid their cards on the table. hun troefkaarten op tafel. "In the end it was Omloop who held the attack. Wim is the fastest." said Gerits. His team leader, Swerts had planned for him to work hard in May and June. The results are there to see. "In the Belgian Championship last year there was always someone from our team on the podium. In Knokke, this year, we plan to repeat the effort." said Gerits who also has Zellik-Galmaarden on his winning list.
