France, June 1, 1998

Riders

Brief

Grand Prix de la Ville de Villers-Cotterets is also called the Trophée Groupe Volkswagen France because the major French assembly plant for the cars is in Villers-Cotterets. There were 117 riders on the starting line.

The race involved 14 laps of 13.8km. Many short breakaways occured until the 9th lap. Then Stéphane Barthe the current French National champion (Casino) moved free on his own and remained clear of the bunch until the end of the penultimate lap. The Cofidis and GAN riders joined forces to close the gap. Barthe was hauled back and then Kirsipuu and Djavanian counter-attacked with less than 12km to go and no one was then able to match them. Kirsipuu easily beat Djavanian on the line. It was the 40th victory for Casino since the beginning of the road season.
