Scott Sunderland Update

Sabine writes:

It has been a while, our computer had to go in to be checked, I had tortured it to much with my skills which date from six years ago in uni.... the technician said he would smack my rear if I do that to my pc again. Anyway, here we are again, and how, with some good news. Scott is continuing to recover with an amazing speed, compaired to us "normal" people. I guess being an athlete has got its pros, but then, if he wouldn't be a cyclist, he wouldn't have been run of his wheels by a TVM team car... He is still going into Ghent almost daily to work on his rehab. The last few days he has had a few problems with his shoulder muscles, I quietly think he had overdone the exercises a bit. He is so eager to get back on that bike.

The 26th he has a check up with the neurologist and if everything is ok he can start going out on the road again, he is really looking forward to that.

In the mean time, he is very dedicated to his rehab program and Fabienne, his kine is really impressed with his aim for perfection while doing the exercises.

The team is a bit lost since the accident, the guys are often on the phone talking to Scott about it. PALMANS has lost more than their kopman for the year I got the feeling, Scott also played a role as trainer and personal adviser I know now.

Walter Planckaert is trying to keep Scott bussy by letting him have his say in the team build up for next year and Scott is loving every minute of it. It keeps him sane.

TVM are playing hard ball, believe it or not. I can't understand that an insurance company is taking such a position, nobody over here does. We thought they would be human in their negotiations but all they have done since the accident is hurt me and Scott by their way of handling this situation. It looks like Scotts' former employer has not to much respect for their ex-employee. You'll hear more of this...

When are you coming to Europe Bill? Let us know hey !!

Till soon, Sabine

Out of the Tour de France

Michele Bartoli will not ride the Tour de France next month. The Italian has a bad dose of bronchitis. In August he hopes to return to the peloton to defend his world cup classification.

Marco Pantani is also having some problems with his health. The Giro winner has also come down with bronchitis and will miss the Tour of Catalonia which began yesterday.

Rob Arnold, editor of the new Ride magazine in Australia, confirmed that Henk Vogels knee problems have flared up again. This time it's the right knee which he feel on twice during the Four Days of Dunkirk, but has generally never had any trouble with.

"I've seen a few specialists over here," Henk said from Toulouse. "But nothing seems to be helping. I am okay for a few days, wait until I think I've had enough recovery time, and then when I'm ont he bike again it just swells up and gives me a lot of pain. "If I had it my way, I'd be on a plane tomorrow to see Victor Popov (former AIS physio) in Brisbane."

Henk (Senior) called this morning to confirm: Henk is coming back to see Victor this Saturday. He'll be out of Gan's Tour de France team.

On a lighter note, Stuart O'Grady confirmed his position in the GAN team for the Tour. "I honestly feel like I'm just riding into form now. Things were good in England, and again in Luxembourg, but it's really coming together now."

Nevada City Classic

Michael Engleman of The Navigators Cycling Team won two stages of the three-stage 1998 Nevada City Classic, held in California June 12-14 on his way to the overall title. Mike completed the opening 76-mile stage in three hours and nine minutes, three seconds ahead of David Clinger (Mercury), Levi Leipheimer (Saturn) and Navigators teammate Scott Moninger. He made it two in a row by winning the 3.8-mile Individual Time Trial in 13:33, eight seconds ahead of Scott Moninger and 34 seconds clear of Clinger. On the third stage of this omnium (points based) stage race they competed in the 38th Nevada City Bicycle Classic Criterium, which has been won by both Mike and Scott two times each, in the past. The stage winner Levi Leipheimer (Saturn) covered this fast and challenging 39-mile course in 1 hour, thirty-two minutes while Mike finished in fourth and Scott finished in 7th position. Mike Engleman was able to retain his overall lead based on his previous days’ results.

The Nevada City Bicycle Classic is the second longest-running race in the United States, behind New Jersey’s Memorial Day Somerville event. This race is best known for its 180 vertical feet of climbing per lap, spectacular finishes, and huge crowds. It is the 18th stop on the 35-city National Racing Calendar (NRC). The NRC is USA Cycling’s season-long point series of the top events in the United States and serves to rank the best Professional and Amateur athletes, as well as teams.
