STEINHAUSER Tobias 1 Brief 30-year old Armand de las Cuevas, regained a new enthusiasm along the road of th 50th Critérium du Dauphiné Libéré, that culminated in a brilliant victory on GC at the end in Megève. The Frenchman from Banesto, the old team of Miguel Indurain (who won the race twice in 1996 and 1996), forged his victory on Mont Ventoux, on Wednesday, when he attacked and stayed away with his Spanish teammate Jose Maria Jimenez. In winning the GC, he became the first French rider to take the race overall since Charly Mottet accomplished the feat in 1992. His win yesterday was not due to the last stage being without risk but rather because of the great work of his team. On the climb of Ventoux, Banesto realised that they had a strong triple-act running - Jimenez, de las Cuevas and Miguel Angel Pena - and they arrived at Megève for the 7th and last stage, they repeated the act even if the order of places was different. As it happened Pena took the stage win in front of Jiminez and de las Cuevas, the latter holding on to the GC. It was a prestigious win for the Banesto team. The Banesto riders, countered a number of tentative attacks from the start - from François Simon (GAN), then Laurent Brochard (Festina), and then Maximilian Sciandri (Française des Jeux), Rolf Sorensen (Rabobank) and Christophe Agnolutto (Casino). Banesto controlled each situation and then they made the last attack of the stage! Jimenez made the first attack, alone, just before the last major difficulty. But he slowed and waited for Pena and de las Cuevas, who had made their own escape from a group that contained all the notable climbers like Richard Virenque (Festina) and Jean-Cyril Robin (US Postal) and the Colombien Carlos Contreras (Kelme). The Banesto triumph was almost complete and the three rider arrived at the end together. De las Cuevas said at the end: "The success signifies that Banesto which will regain Abraham Olano will be strong in the Tour de France and has shown that we can counter difficult conditions in all weather." But the veteran French champion, who has rediscovered his talents as a climber during this week, is not preoccupied with adding the Tour de France to his C.V.: "I am resting now and perhaps the form in the Dauphine was 15 days to early!" |
