VIDAL Jose 1 Brief Since the Critérium du Dauphiné Libéré began at the weekend, it was always going to be today, on the slopes of Mont Ventoux, that the offensives would begin. The Banesto team, with Jose Maria Jimenez, Armand de la Cuevas and Miguel Angel Pena supreme pulled the triple whammy taking the first three places in the stage and the GC. Jiminez took the stage, the Frenchman de las Cuevas took the yellow jersey and Pena took third in both the stage and the GC. This capped off a day of triumph for Miguel Indurain's old team and was completed on the climb of the giant of the Provence, Mont Ventoux. The attack came at the foot of the 16 kms long climb. Jimenez, with de Las Cuevas following went away from the peloton which had been riding in heavy rain since the beginning of the stage. The early part of the stage was enlivened by a long but vain attempt to escape by Rolf Sorensen (Rabobank), Sébastien Hinault (GAN) and Pascal Déramé (US Postal). De las Cuevas said: "When I saw that we were away on the climb, I started to think about the stage victory and the yellow jersey." But the veteran French rider shared the glory with his teammates who had encouraged him up the long climb. The two men - de las Cuevas and Jiminez crossed the line hand in hand, with Jiminez a little in front. Jiminez, the current Spanish champion said: "When I realised that Virenque and Jalabert were not coming I attacked harder. And I knew that with Armand we should take the maximum possible lead on GC that we could, given that there is a time trial tomorrow." The climb saw some notables go off the back Evgueni Berzin (Française des jeux), Chris Boardman (GAN) and 1997 winner, German Udo Bolts all suffered. Bolts abandoned. Jens Voigt (GAN) tried to defend his GC lead but it was too much for him His performance (8th at less than 3 minutes to Jiminze) was certainly encouraging. Similarly, Australian Patrick Jonker and Dutchman Michael Boogerd (both from Rabobank) rode well as did the Polish rider Dariusz Baranowski (US Postal). Fancied riders Laurent Jalabert (ONCE) and Richard Virenque (Festina) were never really in the race once it started climbing. Jalabert, 16th at 3.49, said he would not be starting in the Time Trial on Thursday (41 km to Saint Paul-Trois Chateaux). Virenque, 12th at 3.03, said he climbed well: "Banesto were very strong today." |
