Brief:For the second time in two days, a German edged an American as the International Women’s Challenge finished Sunday.Petra Rossner (Office Max) beat Karen Bliss Livingston (Saturn) over the final 200 meters into Hyde Park after the 121-rider field had raced 64 kms from Emmett. By finishing with the lead field, Linda Jackson (Saeco-Timex) won the overall title by 50 seconds over Valentina Polkhanova (Office Depot). After a brief eight-rider break, which formed after the final mountain sprint, was absorbed, it was apparent that the field was going to come to the finish line in one group. "The sprint started with 10km to go," Livingston said. "It was a gigantic wind-up. Everybody was there. It was hard to stay up front." At the beginning of the final kilometer, Ina Teutenberg (Office Depot), winner of yesterday’s Idaho Statehouse Criterium, was at the front, followed by Rossner and Livingston. With 200 meters to go, Rossner jumped to right, while Livingston went left. It was quickly apparent that Rossner had the edge, enough so that Teutenberg threw her arms up in celebration of her countrywoman’s victory. "She sprinted and I sprinted and we met in front and a won by a wheel," Rossner said. Rossner’s victory means that for the first time in the 14-year history of this elite women’s race, no American won a single stage. Mari Holden (Office Depot) was the top American finisher. Jackson used another strong team effort to keep the leader’s jersey. "They were top notch," she said. "They were all over everything. At one point, I was in the wind chasing and Pam Schuster said, ‘No, Linda, let me do that.’" The effort was reflected among the Saeco-Timex squad. "The week has just taken its toll on us," said Kendra Wenzel, the team captain. Anna Wilson's Report Hi Bill, well the tour is over and Linda Jackson had no problems holding onto the overall lead today. There was one climb early in the day but almost all the bunch regrouped after that. The race was fast to the finish and the leader's jersey was not challenged. However, there was a big fight on for the points jersey as that is worth $5000. I was 3rd in the points at the beginning of the day and I collected no points over the climb so I dropped to 4th after that. My chance to make amends came with the intermediate sprint of the day but about 4 teams had the same idea and so there was about 10 km of positioning and lead outs for that sprint. The Dream Team wanted Diana to win it and pin pointed me as the biggest threat so I found myself circled by 5 Lithuanians and Russians all with the purpose of preventing me getting out. Luckily Mari Holden also wanted the sprint and Polkanova was helping her out. As Diana took off down the left side of the road Polkanova moved out for Mari and I had enough gap to escape. I got Diana's wheel 250 metres out and it was all pretty easy from there. I still needed to place well in the finish to regain 3rd position in points - and I needed to be top 4 in the finish to move into 2nd in the points jersey. Tracey Gaudry punctured about 5 km to go so one good lead out was out of the race! I went for the Saturn train but with 600 metres to go, Ina Teutenburg launched herself down the left with Petra on her wheel. It took me about 100 metres to get a clear line and then I was just chasing the group that had followed Ina. I finished in 5th place with Petra taking a clear victory from Karen Bliss Livingston. Samokhlakova (I think I have spelled that incorrectly!) was third. So my finish was good enough to move back to 3rd on points but not good enough to take 2nd on points. So we are all very relieved it is over. I have my sprint jersey and we are preparing to party tonight! Stage 6, Emmett to Hyde Park, 64 kms:1. Petra Rossner (Ger) 1.36.14 2. Karen Livingston (USA) 3.
