Brief:In decisive fashion, Linda Jackson won the difficult, 128 km Sourdough Lodge to Galena Summit stage of the International Women’s Challenge Thursday, riding away from a top-notch international breakaway group. After over 120 tough kms which including another challenging climb, Jackson (Saeco-Timex) came to the base of the final, 7 km, six-percent grade climb in a lead group of six riders, including three HP Toner team members -- Rasa Polikeviciute, Zulfia Zabirova and Diana Ziliute -- plus Russian Valentina Polkhanova (Office Depot) and Anna Wilson (Australia). "I had to win this stage," said Jackson, who narrowly lost the HP overall title to Polikeviciute last year. The six riders rode together for the first half of the climb, then Ziliute attacked with 3.5km to go, breaking up the right side, but Jackson quickly countered on the left side. "Diana was a bit of a decoy," Wilson said. "Linda went left, straight over the top of her. Then I just watched from a distance." In less than one-half mile, Jackson was 14 seconds ahead of Polkhanova and Polikeviciute as the others faded. The two chasers only briefly appeared to make up ground on Jackson, who then rode away to win the stage. "My legs were tired, but I knew I could do it," Jackson said. Polikeviciute edged Polkhanova for second in the stage. With the win, Jackson now has a commanding lead over Polkhanova with three stages remaining. The Galena Pass climb was the second tough climb during the arduous stage. The stage opened with a nine-mile, five-percent climb via the Ponderosa Pine Scenic Route along the Snake River. Only 32 of the over 130 starters made it over that climb in the lead group, though another caught the leaders during the ensuing descent. Wilson triggered the first breakaway of the day, just after the leaders turned onto Highway 75 toward the Galena Summit. The Australian, yesterday’s stage winner, was in a 13-mile break through the cross-winds with Giana Roberge (Cane Creek) as the field made its way along the Sawtooth Mountain Range. Roberge is normally a teammate of Jackson’s on the Saeco-Timex squad, but the Hewlett-Packard race limits teams to four riders. Roberge dropped out of that break and then helped the field reel Wilson in with 19 miles remaining in race. Friday’s third stage covers 105 kms and includes the same climb up Galena Pass before continuing to the site of Sun Valley Ski Area. "All I kept thinking with 1km to go was ‘Oh no, we have to do this again tomorrow,’" Jackson said. Anna Wilson's Report Hi again Bill. Well stage 2 of the Hewlett Packard tour is over and it was definitely the toughest stage of the bike race. We had a climb over Banner Creek and a QOM sprint at 35kms and I went over just on the back of the first group. Yay! I suffered a fair bit though - a lot more than quite a few of the other riders so I was a bit concerned at that point. The stage finished on top of Galena at 8000 feet so I would need to be climbing well. Longo punctured or something so disappeared to the second group over the top. Tracey Gaudry crashed somewhere on the climb and her, Liz Tadich and Juanita Feldhahn were all in the second group over the top, about a minute back. Once we had descended, the twins Rasa and Jolanta Polikevicuite, Zabirova, Edita Pukinskaite and Diana Ziluite began attacking one after the other and Saeco had to do a lot of work to protect Linda Jackson's lead. The second group eventually caught us and things settled down for a while. Then with about 50km to go Team Australia went on the attack. I attacked first, Liz countered me, Tracey countered her and I countered her and was successful. I got away with a Saeco rider who of course did no work as she was riding for Linda. My break went out to almost a minute before the Russians got their act together and brought me back. About 10 kilometres later there was a hot spot sprint and Zabirova did a big lead out for Diana. Liz was leading me out but couldn't compete with Zabirova and so I ended up on Diana's wheel, unable to get over her in the sprint. However, Zabirova had done such an awesome lead out in the cross winds that we had gapped the bunch. Rasa, Diana, Zabirova, Polkanova, Linda Jackson and myself got a break and the first 4 started driving it. Linda and I did as little as possible - just basically rolling through. I knew the other 5 were all great climbers and with the stage finishing at 8000 feet on top of Galena I was concerned not to expend too much energy getting to the base. Linda also did very little, a bit concerned about the Lithuanian team having three riders in the break. We hit the climb together and stayed together until about 3 kms from the finish. Then Diana attacked and Linda went after her. Linda basically went straight through her and continued on solo. Rasa and Polkanova stuck together chasing Linda and I was struggling behind with Diana and Zabirova. About 1500 metres to go I couldn't stay with them any longer. Longo, Heeb and Edita came past me with about 50 metres to go and just gapped me for the finish. So I came in 9th and Cappellotto finished just behind me. That should put me 10th overall. Tomorrow we race from Stanley over Galena again but this time we continue on down the other side and finish in Ketchum. I am sure Longo and Heeb will be out in force to make amends for today. Did I mention that Linda did win solo today and so has extended her lead in GC. Stage 3, Sourdough Lodge - Galena Pass, 128 kms:1. Linda Jackson CAN 3.40.28 2. Rasa Polikeviciute LIT 0.33 3.
