Brief:Canadian Linda Jackson won the opening Bogus Basin Time Trial Tuesday, earning the leader’s jersey after the prologue of the International Women’s Challenge.Jackson (Saeco-Timex) covered the 2.75 kms, uphill course in seven minutes, 13 seconds despite a howling head wind estimated at a steady 32 km/h with gusts of much higher speed. "It’s a relief to have the jersey," Jackson said. "When I go back and tell the team, I think they’ll be really psyched." Lithuanians Edita Pucinskaite (Boise Cascade Office Products) and Diana Ziliute (HP Toner) finished second and third, respectively. Mari Holden (Office Depot) was the top American finisher in ninth place. Eight different nations were represented in the top 10 finishers. Defending champion Rasa Polikeviciute (HP Toner) of Lithuania finished 20th, 39 seconds behind Jackson. Polikeviciute was assessed a 15-second penalty for cutting the course as she rounded the final turn on the left side of the centre stripe. The performance marks a return to form for Jackson, who has not had a 1998 season equal to a year ago, when she won the Tour de L’Aude in France and was on the podium at the Tour Feminin and Giro d’Italia as well as the HP stage race. The story of the day was the conditions, especially the wind which hampered the 138 riders. Jackson’s time was 53 seconds off the record time of 6:20 set by Rebecca Twigg in 1986. "It was so hard," said Stacey Peters (LeMond). "Oh my god, I’m going to die." Peters finished 18th with a time of 7:51. Wednesday’s first stage is a 77 kms road race from Boise to Idaho City. Anna Wilson's Report Hi Bill - well just a brief note before I hit the sack to let you know the results of the prologue for the tour. I had a shocker - punctured 1 k into the 2.8 km prologue and rode a flat tyre to the finish. James Victor's Report - Australian Team Linda Jackson, the runner-up in this tour last year, has returned to some overdue form to take out the prologue of the International Womens Challenge. After a slow start to 1998, Jackson, 40 years of age from Canada, scorched up the demanding hill-climb into a roaring head-wind to win comfortable. Kathy Watt put in a respectable time to put herself in contention early, with the best Australian from the national team, A.I.S. cyclist, Tracey Gaudry. Anna Wilson had hopes of a good result to begin this tour, after a fantastic 5th place in the recent Montreal World Cup, plus being one of only four past winners of this tour endeavouring to win for the second time; a feat yet to be achieved. Wilson got away to a solid start, but 1 km into the 2.8 km course, Wilson suffered a rear tyre blow-out. Only neutral service was possible with the tight uphill course, so Wilson decided to ride the tyre flat for 1.8 km to the finish. No doubt a contender for an early top 10 start to the tour, but now the job is ahead of Wilson to try and make up the difference to the leaders. Tadich is still a little hesitant with her back injury, but everything is improving daily. Feldhahn rode solidly to place in the first half of the 140 starters. This being the first tour competition for the whole Australian team since Tour de Snowy in April, the Australians are looking for this tough racing to ready themselves for the 3 month European campaign that lies ahead, including the Commowealth Games in Malaysia in September.
