Australian Team Brief:

Brian Stephens who is with the Australian Institute of Sport team reports that the Australian team consists of Jamie Drew, Sean Sullivan, Alan Iacuone, Daniel Trinne and Deane Rogers.

Today's stage was 159 km with a category 3 climb which had to be climbed twice and finishing with 4 laps of an 8km circuit. Not a great day for us with a break of 20 going in the first 40km with none of the Australians. It didn't look like succeeding but did. 15 of the 20 made it to the finish with 59 seconds in hand. The hardest stages are to come but we would have liked a more positive start.

Australian Team Brief:

Second stage of the Baby Giro today was supposed to be one of the toughest. There were 5 category 2 climbs, all in the second half of the stage. The Aussies tried hard but weren't able to make the really good groups over the climbs. Alan Iacuone was aggressive all day and was part of a dangerous break leading up to the 1st climb but faded over the last 2 climbs. Our aim now is to forget the general classification and to concentrate on some stage results which is well within our reach.

Flat stage tomorrow with 2 cat 3 climbs. One at the start and one at the end. A good stage for the opportunist.

Stage 3, Abbadia - Marsciano, 174 kms:

Brian Stephens reports that this race is so hard to read. There are so many teams (36) with only 5 riders in each. Today Jamie Drew was in the 1st break of the day but was brought back after 20km. Then Alan Iacuone had a go with a group of 5. They stayed away for 20 odd km and as soon as they came back a group of 3 got away and stayed away. All our guys finished in the main group.

Maybe tomorrow but it's a tough finish with 4 laps of an 11km circuit, half of which is up hill and makes up a category 2 climb, 4 times. The race finishes at the top on the 5th time up the climb.

Stage 4, Torgiano - Arcevia, 156 kms:

Today's race, as expexcted went nuts on the finish circuit. There were attacks and crashes galore. They ended up in groups of one at the finish with Alan Iauone, our best finisher at just under 3 minutes. Deane Rogers fell into a hole today (not literally) and had lost a lot of time by the feed zone where he pulled out. Pity with the time trial tomorrow.

Tomorrow is a split stage with 123km in the morning and a 35km time trial in the afternoon.

Stage 5a, Arcevia - Porto San Giorgio, 123 kms:

Brian Stephens writes that the morning stage of a two-stage day was stuffed up by officials. The race entered a busy seaside town and took a wrong turn. Then the bunch did a lap of town to what they thought was the finish and were told there was a lap to go. The race was stopped after much confusion and the result was given as the first time over the line. As the bunch was together it did not cause too many problems. Daniel Trinne and Jamie Drew were active all day but the finish did not affect them.

There was no change on GC.

Stage 6, Montappone - Misano Adriatico, 180 kms:

Brian Stephens writes that this stage was tough as any so far in the Tour. After everyone had ridden so hard in the tough time trial the feeling was that the race might settle down in this stage. But instead it went crazy. It was hilly all day with strong cross winds and very hot conditions. We were kept very busy getting water to riders scattered in 4 separate groups. Alan Iacuone lost time. He had ridden very hard in the time trial the day before and hadn't recovered enough. The biggest disappointment came when Jamie Drew missed the time cut (9% of the winners time) in a group of 12 by 37 seconds. We tried to get the time limit exteded due to the conditions but there was no way. 3 Australian riders are now left in the race.

Stage 7, Misano Adriatico - Campo Galliano, 188 kms:

This stage over 188 kms was the first flat terrain encountered so far. It was Still an aggressive stage with an average over 46kph. A group of 18 with no Aussies went to 2.10 by the finish. The lead changed again with Ringhi taking over. We were all woken this morning by the UCI blood test crew. Rude way to start the day.

Today's stage was 62km to a 21km circuit which they did 4 times. Flat and fast all day with small groups going off the front continuosly. Sean Sullivan was aggresive and attacked with an Italian rider in the last lap but was brought back after 2 or 3 km. Daniel Trinne showed some speed to run 6th on the stage with the whole field up for the finish. Under 23 world champion, Kurt Arvesen won the stage.

Stage 9, Castelmassa - Castelfranco Veneto, 180 kms:

Brian Stephens writes that there were a lot of crashes during this stage but the Australian riders missed them all. There was a group away most of the day who went on to win the stage. The main group split into pieces over a Category 2 climb at the 140km mark but was pretty well reformed by the finish. Al and Sean were in that and Daniel was in a group behind.

We head into the big mountains tomorrow with 4 category 1 climbs, one being the finish.

Stage 10, Castelfranco Veneto - Brusago, 186 kms:

It was a really hard days racing today. The lead changed again with di Lucca taking the pink jersey. That's the same guy that won so impressively in Friuli last week. He also won the time trial by over a minute and is Italian under 23 champion. I can't see him being beaten here. The Aussies struggled on the climbs today. Al and Sean finishing in a big group of 42 riders at 21 minutes and Daniel in another smaller group at 25 minutes. The last stage is tomorrow and it promises to be no walk in the park. There are 2 Category 1 climbs before 52km. Then basically down hill to the finish near Bassano del Grappa.
