Brief

Five of the first eight of the Giro d'Italia will be at the start in Pontedecimo - the most significant being Pavel Tonkov. The Italian press say the nobility of the Giro are here for the 59th edition of the Giro dell'Apennino. Of-course, the most illustrious name is missing - Marco Pantani. But there is Camenzind, Clavero, Gontchar and Savoldelli. The organisers are hoping for big things in this race. They have requested the Italian Cycling Federation transform the race in 1999 into the Italian Championship. It will be considered by the Federation in July.

Tonkov, however, thinks his chances today will depend on how he has recovered from the hard work he put in during the Giro. "I do not hide from the fact that I gave everything in the Giro and I have sensed the depletion in training in the last week. But all riders are in the same position as me, although perhaps I spent more of myself in the last week of the Giro than most."
