35th Omloop der Drie Zustersteden, Cat 1.6

Belgium, July 12, 1998

Past Winners

Brief:

This year's Willebroekse Drie Zustersteden did not encounter a sunny summer's day but was instead held in rain and wind which gave the riders extra problems. Peter Van Hoof from the Poortland team (Elite and based in Mechelen), repeated his victory from 1997 (and 1993) and took a huge floral prize and some beer back home.

The opening kms of the race were fast. For the first 20 kms the peloton was like a train with Peter Van Hoof in command. He and Dutchman Wilfried Bastiaanse went away and worked well together. The chasing bunch were kept in contention due to the strong work of Ronny Van Asten. That Van Asten finished in 10th place after all his work made his manager Patrick Verschueren happy.

Peter Van Hoof was lucky to win his 6th race. "There were 4 Dutchman still in contention. But on the last lap it was clear that I was stronger than my fellow breakaway Bastiaanse. The Dutchman wanted to slow the speed down."
