GP Roger de Vlaeminck Eeklo, Cat 1.6

Belgium, July 22, 1998

Eeklo, 176 kms:

In the interclub competition in Eeklo Gino De Weirdt won his third race for the season. The rider from East Flanders was among a final top group of 19 riders as the race entered its last 2 finishing circuits. He attacked with Glen Thomson (NZ) and Danny Van Looy (Bel). The Dutch rider Edwin Dunning reacted but was at 20 seconds to the three breakaways. Van Looy was set for the sprint but was outmanouvered by Thomson. Neither could match the finishing sprint of De Weirdt.

De Weirdt said afterwards: "I thought that Thomson was the best rider over the last few kms. I chose his wheel for the final sprint. And just as well. I am really happy for the club. The points we won today will keep us in the A Category."
