Brief

The Dutch National Championships are held at Meerssen in Limburg just north of Maastricht. On Saturday, the neo-Amateurs (Under 23) and the women race. Tomorrow it is the open race for older amateurs and professionals.

According to Cees Priem, tomorrow's Dutch Championship does not have a good feeling about it. The boss of TVM says that there will be too many riders wearing Rabobank shirts. TVM will use only nine riders including Blijlevens, Dubbeldam, Hoffman, De Jongh, Van Kessel, Voskamp, Vries and maybe Van der Ven.

"While it reflects the current situation, it is not good for cycling. They will be so strong tomorrow that it will come down to 20 Rabobank riders against two TVM riders. Now, which team will win that contest."

The possibility of the Dutch riders (Blijlevens, Hoffmann, Knaven, Voskamp) who live in Belgium riding the Belgian Championship has been averted. The lure of World Championship positions is too strong.

Is Priem frustrated by the strength of Rabobank and its almost "national team status"? "For years, I was the only one who was giving young Dutch amateur riders the chance of a professional contract. I have nothing against Rabobank and I do not want to be seen as creating conflict between teams. It is their right to do what they want and to take a lot of money out of cycling. TVM's strategy will remain the same. I will continue to bring on young riders and we can see by their results how well things go."

Would he like the Rabo budget? "Not really. I have always been up against these great teams like Panasonic (Post), PDM (Gisbers) and Buckler (Raas). We just do our own thing. We are a real club. And so I focus on the team rather than individual riders."
