Stage 5 Report

German cyclist from Team UAG, René Diers, who was never amongst the list of favorites, launched a furious attack at 300 meters from the finish to reach the line swaying his arms and celebrating his victory in the 5th stage of the Ruta México 1998, which was contested over a circuit in the centre of Guadalajara.

This fifth stage turned out to be spectacular and full of emotion and was celebrated in the avenues of 16 de Septiembre, Juárez, Federalismo, Jesús García and Alcalde. Only a few thousand enjoyed the competition, mainly along the finish line located in front of the Plaza de Armas. The crowds were well down on usual numbers.

A total of 117 cyclists set out for the 25 laps for a total of 126.2 kms, instead of the 100 kms which was originally announced. The stage was full of surprises amongst them a fall on lap eight, right in front of the finish line. The space available for the riders was not wide enough and some riders touched the legs of the barriers, with 22 riders falling on the ground. Graciano, Patricio Ruiz, Hilarión Sánchez and many more were involved and lost up to one minute and 50 seconds, even though the majority of them was able to recuperate and connect with the main group.

This stage had an intermediate prize at lap 13, which was won by René Diers, beating Ernesto Lechuga from Team Arovic Turbo and Víctor Rodríguez from the Jalisco selection in the sprint. There were several breakaway attempts but none would be able to open more than a 12 second gap. On lap 23, Noé Germán Camacho, of the Jalisco Team tried to attack and was joined by American Steve Speaks, but by lap 24 the peloton rejoined and the bell was rung for the last lap.

Five minutes later one could see the sirens and flashing lights from afar and behind them René Diers, who quickly escaped the peloton, like the fox from the hounds. Seeing that victory was his, he looked back and saw behind him Antonio Aldape, from Karst de Guanajuato and Brazilian Junior Quadri. Diers' time was 2 hours, 26 minutes and 51 seconds. Followed by Mexican Antonio Aldape with a time of 2:26:54 and Brazilian Junior Quadri, with the same time of 2:26:54.

Stage 6 Report

Mexican riders shined today on the mountains of Huamantla by taking first and second places in a close battle with Colombian cyclists. The group commanded by Mexican Miguel Arroyo did the impossible to win and even stayed back for his compatriot Siddharta Camil, who crossed the finish line first with a time of 3.37.10. Camil was thus able to beat Miguel Arroyo and Colombian José Robles, who were second and third respectively in the stage, with a time of 3.37.14. Colombian Juan Carlos Fonseca remains the overall leader with a time of 19:32:40 after covering a total of 809.2kms. Camil is now in third place of the overall with a time of 19:33:11.

It seemed like this win would never come, but with only 16kms covered the Mexicans started to become active. On kilometer 34, Mexican Julio Alberto Pérez took command of the peloton until km. 45. On the first mountain prize at El Pueblito (Km. 50), the Colombians seemed to wake up, because José Luis Vanegas crossed it first, followed by Raúl Montaña and Libardo Niño making it 1-2-3, but in the next 10kms the Colombians would be absorbed by the peloton. The first intermediate prize would be at km. 63 in the region of Zacapu and the fans would witness American Andy Bishop crossing it first, followed by German Rene Riers and Mexican Irving Aguilar. After this, Costa Rican Federico Ramírez and Austrian would go away from the peloton and seemed to be headed for glory. At the second intermediate prize (106km) the Austrian crossed in front followed by Ramírez and Riers.

The second mountain prize came in the town of El Tigre (117kms) with Arroyo crossing first followed by Colombians Miguel Robles and Vanegas.

Stage 7 Report

In a dramatic finish, German Holger Shubert won the 7th stage which finished in Queretaro with a time of 4.23.49 (198 kms). The second and third place went to Mexican Miguel Meza and Austrian Joseph Lontscharitsch with a time of 4:23.49 respectively, in a close finish in front of about a thousand people.

The seventh stage began with an attack from Mexican Miguel Meza. The first intermediate prize was taken by American Andy Bishop who launched a sprint to take it, followed by German, Holger Shubert and Meza. From that point on the three steadily put distance on the peloton.

At kilometer 53 there was a big fall which split the peloton, taking Italian Cannone Marco out of the race, while Meza continued to drive the break with Shubert. They were later joined by German Steffen Paul and Mexicans Eduardo Uribe and Víctor Manuel Cruz. The breakaway now had 8 riders which were working well together and the peloton didn't appear to be in a hurry to bring them back. The stage was taken by German Shubert in a tight finish.

The overall lead remains with Colombian Juan Carlos Fonseca with a time of 23 hours, 56 minutes and 29 seconds, after concluding the seventh stage between American Steve Speaks is second at 11 seconds and Mexican Siddharta Camil third at 31 seconds.

This eight stage had to be shortened by 59kms. because of extensive road damage. The start was at Palmillas. The first mountain prize was located in Bovini, with José Luis Vanegas taking first, followed by Montaña and Fonseca a with Miguel Arroyo after them. At this time the group of four had remained in front of the peloton with Mexicans Jesús Zárate, José Luis Jiménez and Miguel Meza opening a 21 second gap to try to take the second intermediate prize. But the prize would be taken by Colombian Vanegas, followed by American Bishop and Mexican Zárate.

During this part of the race was when some of the prizes had to be eliminated due to the road conditions. At around 20 kms the Colombian attack would be absorbed by the peloton lead by Austrian Joseph Lontscharitsch, who would end up taking the stage.

Stage 9 Report

Colombian Juan Carlos Fonseca regained the GC leadership after Stage 9. Mexican Miguel Arroyo also continues to ride well and maintained second on the GC. On Wednesday the race had to contend with gale force winds but on Thursday it was the searing hot weather in the region of Guerrero and the tough climbs that sorted the riders out.

From the start of the stage, Eduardo Graciano attacked, and was later joined by Juan Luis González and Camil Siddartha. This caused a reaction in the peloton, which was lead by Team Sol-Benotto. The breakaway was neutralized after 138 kms as as select group of nine riders ran them down. The overnight GC leader, American Steve Speaks had now lost his jersey "on the road" by missing this break as the hills got tougher. Speaks started to have problems from the ascent of Ixtapan and even though he later connected with the second group, the mountain top finish ended up knocking him from his top place in the overall.

Of the nine riders involved in the breakaway there were a few like "El Halcón de Huamantla" Arroyo, José Robles, Antonio Aldape and Scott Moninger, who were well placed overall. During the descent to the tourist spot finish, Colombian Gregorio Ladino, Arroyo's teammate in Canel's-Turbo, attacked from the breakaway and once he opened a gap, he was followed by compatriot Libardo Niño, from Team Sol-Colombia. But Niño had instructions to prevent both Arroyo and Moninger from taking the time bonuses at the finish line, since Fonseca was suffering in the last meters and was dropped by the lead group.

Niño counter-attacked and went off alone, but was quickly chased and passed by Arroyo, who had also left the group; Niño held his wheel and was able to attack the Mexican one more time, 500 meters from the finish. Niño, the winner for Team Sol-Colombia, finished the stage with a time of 3.33.22; Arroyo was second at 3 seconds and Colombian José Robles, from Team Karst Musher, finished third at 12 seconds.

Jesús Zárate, teammate of the new overall leader and who had started second overall before the stage, lost 2.01 in the stage.
