The 35th Trofeo Laigueglia, staged on Tuesday February 17 has attracted
a class field of 200 riders. Amongst the riders who have nominated for
the race are Italian Michele Bartoli, who has started the season with
two stage wins at the Tour of the Mediterranean. Also riding
will be Ivan Gotti, in his first race for 1998, Pavel Tonkov, Gianni
Faresin, Rodolfo Massi (the winner of the recently completed Tour of
Mediterranean), Gianni Bugno, Franco Ballerini, Fabrizio Guidi
(who came in second last year), Mirko Celestino, Davide Rebellin, Claudio
Chiappucci, Gabriele Colombo, Enrico Zaina, Bo Hamburger, Andrea Ferrigato,
Frédéric Guesdon, Gianluca Bortolami among others.
There will be 14 Italian teams (Mapei-Bricobì,
Asics-CGA, Saeco-Cannondale, Mercatone Uno-Bianchi,
Brescialat-Liquigas, Scrigno-Gaerne, Team Polti,
Mobilvetta-Northwave, Vini Caldirola-Longoni Sport,
Riso Scotti-Aiwa, Amore & Vita-ForzArcore, Cantina
Tollo-Alexia Alluminio, Ros Mary-Amica Chips e Ballan)
and 9 foreign teams (Telekom, Festina, Casinò, Lotto-Mobistar,
Swiss Sharp, Vitalicio Seguros, Vlaanderen 2002, La Francaise des
Jeux & TVM).
The race will start and finish at Laigueglia and will cover 170kms.

Brief
The two leading place-getters attacked from the peloton with
25 kms left to ride. Pascal Chanteur was the quickest in
the sprint. The winning time of 4.10.09 gave an average speed of 40.6
kms/hr. The key to the race was the last 25kms, after climbing
the "Crocetta di Moglio", the last climb of the race, with an altitude
of 360 meters. Mazzoleni attacked from a group of about 10 riders and only
Chanteur was able to hold his wheel. The rest of the earlier breakaway
finished 1.44 back. Chanteur easily beat the 25 year old Mazzoleni, from
Team Saeco, a pro since 1996.
