OUTSCHAKOV, Serguei UKR 1.17 Brief Switzerland's Alex Zülle did not race in the first stage of the "Tour" and will make his race debut on Monday in stage 2. This race is an oddity because riders can come and go as they please. 26-year old German sprint ace, Erik Zabel won the Trofeo Majorca today which is the first stage of the the Tour of Mallorca. The Telekom rider outsprinted Australia's Robbie McEwen, riding for Rabobank, with Banesto's English connection Jeremy Hunt third. The first stage was held over an 80 kms circuit around the island city of Palma. Telekom's team also contained Tour de France winner Jan Ullrich, who finished in the main peloton and dismissed the performance as "preparation and part of his fitness program". He is reported as saying: "The advantage of this race is that I am up against most of my major rivals for this year's Tour de France such as Laurent Jalabert, Alex Zulle and Abraham Olanod. However this race will not affect what happens later in the season because like me they have just come to get some road racing under their belts." Eric Zabel (Ger) Telekom all s.t. Brief Tom Steels took his first flowers for the new season by winning the second stage of the 7th Challenge Internacional Vuelta a Mallorca. He was the fastest in a top group of six when it came down to the sprint. In the final kilometres Laurent Jalabert and Nico Mattan were caught after an early attack. The Gran Premio Pollenca (159 kms), which were raced between Pollenca and Puerto Pollenca, included Jan Ullrich, Abraham Olano, Alex Zulle and Laurent Jalabert, amongst others. It turned out to be rather boring in its first half but during the second half it was exactly the opposite with high speeds and constant attacks. The decisive point came at the climb of Alto de Femenia, at around km 90, when several riders took off and fragmented the peloton, leaving behind three of the stars - Olano, Ullrich and Zulle. Jalabert was able to hold on. On the descent Spaniard David Etxebarria and Frenchman Christophe Bassons opened a gap of up to one minute, with only 30kms to the finish, which provoked several team to organise. Mapei was the first, using Leyser to neutralize the escape and the they provoked a breakaway which included Steels, Vandenbroucke, Peeters and Museeuw, together with Van Bon and Klier. Just before this move, Laurent Jalabert showed his face in the front together with Belgian Nico Matten. In the final section the Mapei riders would easily dominate and give Steels his first win of the season, although they couldn't prevent German unknown Andreas Klier from taking the leader's jersey because of his placing in the two races already raced. With 7 kms to go, Rolf Sörensen was the first to attack. But he was run down by a fast finishing Mapei team. With such a high speed being held there were no further attacks possible and the race came down to a mass sprint. Jeremy Hunt won the third stage in the Tour of Mallorca. The British rider from the Banesto team was the fastest in the mass after 159.9 kms. Rabobank rider Robby McEwen and Kelme rider Miguel Angel Martin Perdiguero took second and third place. Hunt was the most astute in the final section of the boring stage which finished in Manacor, known internationally as the pearl capital of the world. Sorensen's first attack came on when the peloton had reached the streets of Manacor. Together with the Dane's attack the other highlight was the effort made by the Kelme team during the climb of el alto del Honor, a category two located at km 68. The first on the top was Francisco Cabello, but he wasn't able to break the peloton and the riders like Jan Ullrich, Alex Zulle, Abraham Olano and Laurent Jalabert made it without difficulty. Once The peloton reached Manacor it was ONCE who controlled the race. They failed however, like Sorensen, to force a break in the race. The great beneficiary of all this was Jeremy Hunt, who rode behind the Mapei riders, who were trying to setup yesterday's winner, Tom Steels. |
