Tour 1998The Dutch teams TVM and Rabobank are already certain of riding the Tour de France this year. They are in the first 16 teams (each with 9 riders) who the organisation of the Tour have chosen (based on UCI rankings at January 1).The Italian team Riso Scotti (with Baldato and Minali) was not chosen due to the fact that the team on January 1 was not in the top 16 teams. In between time, transfers have put Riso Scotti near to 20th position. Polti, also from Italy, with some top hitters in Frenchman Luc Leblanc and the Belgian Axel Merckx, profited in a similar manner. In total, by July 11 in the Irish Capital, 20 or 21 teams will start. Last year there were 22 teams at the start. On June 16, after the Tour of Italy and the Criterium Dauphiné Libéré, we will know the fate in the Tour of another 4 teams and the one wildcard. The Organisers have the wildcard joker in the hand to select the 21st team. Already participating are: Festina, La Française des Jeux, GAN and Casino (Frane), Mapei, Saeco, Mercatone Uno en Polti (Italy), ONCE, Banesto and Kelme (Spain), TVM en Rabobank (Netherlands), Telekom (Germany), Lotto (Belgium) and US Postal (USA). Rincon makes comebackRoberto Vecchio (Eurosport) writes: What I can see in the list from Wielerevue is that there is only one rider that has made a comeback in the Div 1 group. It is Oliverio Rincon from Colombia. He stopped after the 1996 season when he rode for the ONCE team. This year he's back in business as a professional with the new Vitalicio team.Sven NijsThe new (but also the former) World Espoirs Cyclo Cross Champion, Sven Nijs, has been awarded the 6th Provincial Sport's Prize for the Province of Vlaams-Brabant. The award was made in Hofstade. Nijs won the award ahead of the other contenders tennis players Dominique Monami-Van Roost en Sabine Appelmans. The young cyclo cross rider received a bronze craftwork from the Craftsperson from Leuven, Fred Bellefroid. The Jury comprised leading provincial sports experts and journalists. Food poisoning for Ivan SchrijverDuring a training camp in Benidorm (Spain), 18-year old Dutch rider Ivan Schrijver has come down with food poisoning. The rider from the AXA Cycling Team is in a hospital in Alicante. There is a fear that more riders from the team with former professionals John Van den Akker, John Den Braber and Luppes will contract the illness.Delay for 3 TeamsThe Belgian teams Collstrop and Palmans and the Swiss team Post-Swiss nearly didn't start in the Marseillaise race since some bank papers required by the UCI had not arrived in time. After much negotiation with the headquarters in Lausanne the three teams finally heard the verdict of the jury which was: "That while the matter is still outstanding, the three teams will not be considered as "complete" teams."This means they are under a cloud for the depart of the Etoile de Bessèges with the risk of being deprived of their UCI that they may eventually get during the week of the race. Some Beautiful Data to ConsiderIn one of my lives I spend hours building large economic models using pretty complex systems estimation (regression) techniques. I have a fair liking for data of all sorts. See some data, do some analysis. So when David Cowie, a regular contributer (of the South African Cycling Page fame) sent me the latest musings from his spreadsheet I thought - the gang are going to like all these numbers.Dave used data available from the 1997 Tour de France. So what are they? Well BMI = Body Mass Index is equal to weight in kgs divided height in metres squared. The denominator is designed to scale the measure to reproduce standardised height-weight relations found in broad populations. The riders are listed in order of their height in metres. In general the lower the better if you want to go up hills fast. Have fun with it.
