Brief

Brian Holm and Danny Nelissen were in a breakaway group with 12 other riders for the most of the day, but approx 30 riders caught them just before the last lap of 22km.

With 10 kms to go, Philippe Gaumont (Cofidis) and Enrico Cassani (Polti) attacked and were run down 200 metres from the finishing line. Unfortunately Jack and Jones rider Marc Strange Jakobsen crashed and broke his arm, he also has concussion.

French Team Casino is in great form. After taking the first victory of the season with Marco Saligari at the GP La Marsigliese, the team directed by Vincent Lavenu was the animator on the first stage of the Etoile de Bessèges between Ciotat and Aubagne. But for all of that they had to be content with second place when Alberto Elli, who was beaten in the sprint by Dutch Knaven.

This first stage was very active from the start with numerous attacks and attempts. After only 20kms a small group developed in front guided by Elli, Tchmil, Knaven, Leblanc, Cassani and some helpers from Team Polti. With 50kms from the finish they opened a gap of a few minutes from the peloton which was riding at cyclo-tourist speed. At this point there was an attack by Enrico Cassani, with Frenchman Gaumont, both of whom opened a gap of 45 seconds. Thanks to the efforts of Luc Leblanc the break was not successful. Leblanc was also the victim of an error in the course and he was swallowed in the final circuit with less than two kilometers to go.

In the final straightaway Elli took off rapidly, followed by Knaven, who passed him only meters from the finish.

Brief

The great move of the day came from Alberto Elli, riding for Team Casino, who took the lead on GC from the Dutch TVM rider Servais Knaven after the second stage, which was won by Danish Christian Andersen.

Yesterday's stage didn't offer many emotions. The peloton of 132 riders rolled along at a fairly pedestrian pace for three quarters of the race and this peace was only disturbed around 30kms to the finish when Gilles Maignan (France), Marcel Gono (Australia), Peter Wuyts (Belgium) and Christian Andersen took off. After 7kms the four had opened a 45 second gap over the peloton which only reacted in the last kilometers. Andersen was able to dispose very easily of Magnien and Wuyts in the sprint and at 31 years of age it is his first win as a pro.

Andersen: "I'm extremely happy. To tell the truth, I didn't expect that our escape would last more than to the entrance to the city, but when I saw that the peloton was at a good distance, I did everything possible to put in line my breakaway companions".

Also happy was Alberto Elli: "I'm in good form, I hope to reach Bessèges with the leader's jersey.

After the second stage, with Gaumont equal in points with Elli, and before the start of the third stage, the organisers, following complaints made by certain riders, decided to recognise that a fall which happened in the last 500 metres of the second stage race had provoked a break in the head of the peloton and thus favoured Gaumont. They decided therefore to modify the rankings of that stage race and to put everybody at the same time.

Brief

27-year old sprinter Jo Planckaert from Belgium won the first major European stage race for the year the Etoile de Besseges in France when he came in 5th in the final stage around the southern French village of Besseges.

It was something of a family tradition that Planckaert had to maintain and did. In 1977 Willy Planckaert (his father) won this race and then in 1984 Eddy Planckaert (his uncle), presumably prior to his EPO days, also won the race. Planckaert himself was second in Paris-Roubaix last year and looks to be in fine form for this year's classic.

The Etoile de Besseges is the lead up to rider for the major race which starts on Wednesday in this region - the 5-day Tour of the Mediterranean.
