Drugs Update

Former Festina manager Bruno Roussel and soigneur Willy Voet have indicated that they are appealing their suspensions handed to them on Friday by the French Cycling Federation (FFC). Roussel received a 5 year ban and Voet a 3 year ban. The two former Festina officials received the news of the bans my letter from the FFC. There was no official announcement. Their lawyers reacted by publicly announcing their intention to appeal.

The appeal by Roussel is not based on the facts. He admitted organising a systematic doping scheme for his riders to protect them from ad hoc and blackmarket practices. He is challenging the right of the FFC and its discplinary committee to deliberate on the matter. He has said that in his view the FFC are complicit in the doping because they have long known about the practices of teams and riders but chose to ignore it.

In an official statement issued by his lawyer he said: "By connivance, the federal authorities have for years allowed the acceptance, at all professional and amateur levels, of the idea that a clean victory was, if not impossible then at least improbable."

It is not known what the basis of Voet's appeal will be.
