The temperature was about 42 degrees celcius which did temper the racing a little! Dream Team was the major controlling force in the race. Zita Urbonaite, Zabirova and Nicole Brandli did all the early work in the race, keeping the bunch together and keeping the World Cup leader, Diana Ziliute, right up the front. Over a small climb at 85km a group of 8 got a small gap - including Ziliute, Cappellotto, Dede Demet, Karen Kurreck, Rasa Polikevicuite and me. We were brought back pretty quickly before we entered the town of Saint Amand for the first time. There was a sprint there and Sara Fellone broke away for the sprint and led us on to the major climb for the race. The climb was at about 100 kilometres - 25 to go. Although it wasn't that hard a climb, with the heat and the distance into the race it proved to be enough to decisively split the field. A group of 11 riders broke clear - and I blew up trying to stay with them and ended up in the second bunch over the top. By this stage I think every rider was feeling like death. I tried to chase but the legs were not responding well. By the finish the lead group had a minute on us.The finish was on a velodrome and from what I hear, Cappellotto led it on to the track and held them all off all the way to the finish. Marsal finished in second place with Ziliute third. I placed 5th in my bunch sprint and so finished 16th overall. Juanita Feldhahn was also in my group and finished 32nd. We now have one day of rest before the Tour de France starts - I think I need about 20 after that exercise! The weather isn't looking any cooler for the Tour so there will be serious amounts of fluids consumed and tipped over heads during the next 2 weeks I would say!
