Brief:

TVM's Serguei Ivanov, the Russian who lives in Scherpenheuvel said after winning the Druivenkoers: "In recent weeks I have been having a quiet period, but today I felt really good. In the next part of the year I will be concentrating on one-day races. But first I will start in the Tour of Poland. After that I will be going to Italy for the classics. Today was going to tell me how good my condition is. This was my fourth win this season."

Only 24 of the original 126 starters finished the race. A feature was the strong showing by the Elite (without contract) rider Davy Daniel. In the two large laps there were constant attacks. In the first, 27 riders created a gap with Tom Steels prominent. In the second lap, Steels was also instrumental ina break of 21 riders. Frank Vandenbroucke rode dropped out at this point and rode to the dressing rooms. The peloton was watchful and so the final result in the race was going to come down to the 7 smaller laps.

In the second of the 7, 12 riders attacked after Davy Daniel had created the move. But another group of 14 were also still in the race. Ludo Dierckxsens was in that group. With 20 kms to go, Kurt Van De Wouwer made the second of his attacking moves. He was promptly joined by Serguei Ivanov who sat his wheel. The Russian has enough speed at the end to beat his breakaway partner in the sprint. Van De Wouwer was run over by Wilfried Peeters at the end and was relegated to third. Van De Wouwer however was told by Belgian coach Marc Sergeant that he would be in the national team for the World Championships at Valkenburg.
