Frenchman Laurent Jalabert, winner in 1997, Banesto's Abraham Olano and the two Swiss riders Laurent Dufaux and Alex Zulle are at the head of the list for the 20th edition of the Tour of Burgos which runs from Tuesday to Friday.

There is a field of 112 riders from 14 teams which will contest the 5 stages. Most of them have come from the Tour of Galacia which ended last Friday. For the first time in its history, the Tour of Burgos will start with an ITT in the environs of Miranda del Ebro.

The second stage takes the riders from Burgos to Villarcayo (175 km), the third from Salas de los Infantes to Aranda de Duero (178 km), the fourth, with several mountain passes, finishes on Las Lagunas de Neila (158 km) and the final stage of 167 kms is from Ona to Burgos.

The Tour of Burgos is the last stage race before the Vuelta a Espagna which commences on September 5. Last year, Jalabert and Olano fought out the final GC and Olano lost by 11/100s of a second.

Brief:

Prior to the start today, World No.1 Laurent Jalabert withdrew from the Tour even though he was only 3 seconds behind the leader Abraham Olano.. He complained of lack of sleep and overall fatigue.

The stage was uneventful and ended in a mass sprint won by Andrei Tchmil. The return to form of Abraham Olano signalled that he wants to win the Tour of Spain which begins on September 5 in Cordoba. He led from start to finish after winning the opening ITT. Olano told the press that: "I just hope things go as well as they have done here because with this sort of performance and in these conditions I'm confident we can do well in September,"
