Brief:

Fabio Sacchi knew 50 metres from the end that he had the better of Daniele Nardello. It was a good end to the week which started badly at the Tre Valle Varesine. At Varesino he had attacked but his winning moved was thwarted by a cramp in his left calf. At Legnano, where the Coppa Bernocchi finished, Nardello used all his remaining strength but was not good enough to offset the fast finishing Sacchi. Alberto Elli also passed him at the end.

The young rider from Milan who rides for Team Polti was hoping to also give his team the Trittico Lombardy (see below) which is the aggregate of the last three days racing decided on points. On Wednesday Davide Rebellin won at Varesine and Mirko Celestino was second in the GP Agostoni on Thursday. Team manager Stanga was very happy when Sacchi took the first place today, confirming the dominance of his team in the last three days. He told the press: "We hope the President of Polti now looks to 1999." Patron Franco Polti has yet to decide if he will remain in cycling."

The two young Polti riders - Celestino and Sacchi are the first to come through the junior development squad of the former professional Antonio B evilacqua. From 1993, under the sponsorship of Gatorade, Stanga and Bevilacqua built a new structure to nurture young talen. They were able to give young riders a chance to progress without too much trauma.

Today's win was the 24-year old Fabio Sacchi's first in professional cycling. He has been helped by Virginio Levati, who in 1971 won here in front of Patrick Sercu and Eddy Merckx.

The race was marked by strong work by Mapei-Bricobu with Nardello and Zanini and the Cantina Tollo riders Baronti, Mazzanti, Hvastija and Paul Valoti. There were continuous attacks but each group was never allowed any leeway. Once the gap opened it was quickly brought back. At the half-way mark of the 9 lap race, Sacchi attacked with Oscar Mason and the French rider Gougot. They were joined by Nardello, Chiappucci, Zanini and Savoldelli and some others.

Chiappucci tried several times to make solitary breaks but never looked liked succeeding. With 47 kms to go, a strong smaller group formed. 9 riders with Hvastija, Shefer, Nardello, Zattoni, Milesi, Elli, Rich, Paolo Valoti and Sacchi. Nardello pushed at the front often but in the end, his last attempt was extinguished by the pursuit of Hvastija. Sacchi said: "I was convinced that Nardello had done himself in. I knew I had to wait. In the Tour de France, when Durand won the stage, I was the fastest but I gave too much too soon. Today I did not repeat the mistake."

Trofeo Trittico Lombardo:

This is the aggregate of the three races held on consecutive days - Tre Valli Varesine (won by Davide Rebellin), the Coppa Agostoni (won by Andrea Tafi) and the Coppa Bernocchi (won by Fabio Sacchi). With 18 points, Mirko Celestino (Team Polti) wins the Trophy from Tafi, Nardello and Rebellin who all had 15 points. Last year the Trofeo Trittico was won by Giovanni Lombardi (Telekom).
