60th Gent-Wevelgem, Cat 1.1

Belgium, April 8, 1998

Brief Preview

Gent-Wevelgem is the second great Flemish classic although it is not part of the World Cup. It will cover the same route of the last two years, with a total of 208 kms and two passes by the Kemmelberg, the first at 56 and the second at 33 kms from the finish. Several big riders will not be participating including Michele Bartoli (who has returned to Italy) and joint-leader of the World Cup, Stefano Zanini (who is at Pais Vasco). Notable starters include Mario Cipollini and Tom Steels.

Steels has been on antibiotic treatment because of a wound in his right leg which he received at the Driedaagse van De Panne. Steels will ride in Mapei with Johan Museeuw, Franco Ballerini, Frank Vandenbroucke and Andrea Tafi.

Nine years after the victory of Gerrit Solleveld, Dutchman Jeroen Blijlevens is one of the biggest favorites of the 60th Gent-Wevelgem. After his victories in the Catalanse Week and the Driedaagse van de Panne he is in top condition. Gent-Wevelgem will be the only Spring classic for Mario Cipollini this year. "I can't say too much about my condition. I didn't sprint with Tom Steels yet. And I lost a sprint with Blijlevens. My targets for this year? The Giro and the green yellow in the Tour de France. But don't think i will do anything special in the final of Gent-Wevelgem."

Hans' View of the Race

A long flight by Gerits and Vandromme ended about 35 km before the finish. Frankie Vandenbroucke attacked and was first on the top of the Kemmelberg, with Pieri in his wheel (speed 37.54 km/ph).

After the Kemmelberg a group of 33 riders (including Cipollini, Lombardi, Museeuw, Zabel, Vandenbroucke, Mattan, Ballerini, Bortolami, O'Grady, Desbiens, Sorensen, Ekimov, Blijlevens, Moncassin, Tafi) formed and had 41" on the peloton with 25 km to go.

With 20 km to go an attack by Nico Mattan. Group at 9"; peloton at 1'30".

With 14 km to go Lars Michaelsen and Frankie Vandenbroucke went to Mattan (group at 14"), so 2 Mapei and 1 TVM lead. Patrick Lefebre predicted on Belgian radio: "Vandenbroucke will win and Blijlevens will win the sprint of the group".

With 11 km to go: 20" for the 3 leaders.

With 9 km to go: 29" at the group.

With 6 km to go: 38" at the group.

Last 5 km several attacks by Mattan and Vandenbroucke; Michaelsen has to follow every time.

With 2 km After several attemps by the Mapei's, Vandenbroucke can attack and Lars can't follow anymore. No problem for Frankie anymore.

Scott Sunderland came in 11th after another strong performance.

Dirk Ryelandt reports

Our other on-the-spot reporter Dirk Ryelandt reports that Frank Vandenbroucke has won the 60th edition of Gent-Wevelgem. Mapei continued their domination of the early season with this 5th win. The team dominated this race with Mattan and Vandenbroucke up front being supported by their big hitting teammate Johan Museeuw and Andrea Tafi back in the bunch controlling any attempts to counter attacks.

The race was held up for a one minute silence for Rudy Dhaenens who died on Monday after a car accident on the way to his job as Eurosport commentator for the Ronde van Vlaanderen.

In the early stages there were two leaders: Gerits (Vlaanderen 2002) and Vandromme (Spar-RDM). There maximum advance was 8.30. Just before the 2nd climb of the Kemmelberg (18% and coblestones) they where caught by a group with Frank Vandenbroucke, Carlo Bomans, Dario Pieri included. The chase began when the Telekom team wanting to get Erik Zabel into a winning position took the gap seriously.

Over the climb a group of 33 riders with all the favourites like Zabel, Cipollini, Museeuw, Blijlevens, Van Petegem, Baldato broke away. The pace was furious after the Kemmelberg because of strong tail winds. With 20 km to go Nico Mattan escaped. Only one rider tried to counter attack: Lars Michaelsen from Denmark (winner in 95 and 4th in 96). Frank Vandenbroucke followed him and so with 10 kms to go there were 3 leaders. Then both Mattan and Vandenbroucke tried to escape but Michaelsen was vigilant until Vandenbroucke successfully got away in the streets of Wevelgem.

Vandenbroucke used the streets of Wevelgem to drop his two breakaway partners and finish 7 seconds ahead of Lars Michaelsen and Frank's best friend and teammate Nico Mattan. The main group finished half a minute later.
