Brief Report

Fernando Escartín (Kelme-Costa Blanca) won the 1st stage of the 35th Vuelta a Aragón and became the race leader into the bargain. He launched an attack at the best time, with 200 meters to the finish, showing that in cycling, even if you don't have the best form, you can still get a good result if you have the will.

Due to the bad weather - rain and snow - the Stage was reduced form 173 kms to 91 kms. The cars found it impossible to cross the mountain passes. The neutralisation occurred at the Cat 1 climb of Cotefablo. The riders were already drenched to the bone and welcomed the stage change.

The stage continued in Boltaña under bright sun, although the rain continued to be a threat and the 112 participants took things easy during the first kilometers. With 25 kms to the finish, the attacks started coming and didn't cease until the end of the stage. The first to try were Vicente Aparicio (Vitalicio Seguros) and Alvaro González de Galdeano (Euskaltel), although the most serious attempt would come from Italian Elio Aggiano (Vitalicio Seguros), who was joined by Mario Scirea (Saeco) with 10 kms to the finish. The 2 Italians were captured with some 3 kms to go, where the peloton broke wide open due to the various climbs that lead to the finish line.

Italiano Massimo Donati (Saeco) launched an attack in the last km and the only one who was able to respond was an alert Escartín, who knew the finish line perfectly, since he was beaten by a slim margin here in the 1995 edition by Simone Borgheresi.

Stage 2 is 138 kms between Alcorisa and Valdelinares, with four mountain climbs and is considered the 'Queen Stage'.
