Scott UpdateCees Priem initially said he hadn't hit Scott. Thousands of TV viewers knew otherwise. It is hard to determine what happened. Van Petegem fell back to the TVM car to collect a bidon and Scott was riding just in front of him and slightly to his right. They were the last two wheels in the 2nd group. Van P collected his bottle from Priem and stuffed it back in his jersey while riding no hands (usual practice). The camera motor bike just to Van P's left and all (car, bikes and riders in very tight). It looked as if Priem drove to the right ever so slightly and, in doing so, clipped the back of Scotty's wheel which caused him to swerve hard to the left and catch Van Petergem amidships. Van P managed to stay upright so Scotty was the only one to fall and a following car just (repeat just) avoided running him over as he lay in the middle of the road. It is difficult to know how bad he is at present. I will keep everyone informed. You can send best wishes to Scott to this email address: Neilstorey@aol.com. Neil will pass them on. Wim's Spring Analysis of Road RacingWim van Rossum has provided this Spring Analysis of Road Racing exclusive to www.cyclingnews.com. For the data freaks it is stupendous. Hope you enjoy it.Wim writes: I have based the following analysis on the UCI-points obtained - by riders and teams - up to and including the 27th April as far as they are known to me (Thanks to the UCI for their help!). I made a division between UCI-points obtained in the 5 World Cup Races (= W.C.); the 4 "great Tours" (Paris-Nice, Tirreno-Adriatico; Setmana Catalana and Vuelta el Pais Vasco = G.T.) and all others races (= Oth). As the figures show, Michele Bartoli (Asics) is also the largest point scorer in the World Cup events. He is around 170 points ahead of second-ranked Franco Ballerini (Mapei) and number 3 Andrei Tchmil (Lotto). Looking to the team ranking the Mapei-Bricobi team has dominated the season to date leading the second-placed team, Rabobank by more than 600 points, while no.3 Casino has only half the points of Mapei. For the "Great Tours" we see a completely different picture, with the dominant team being ONCE-Deutsche Bank and their riders. They are in first place in the Team-ranking with an advantage of 670 points over Rabobank in second position. ONCE riders Laurent Jalabert and Inigo Cuesta Lopez are leading the individual rankings followed by Festina rider Alex Zülle (ex-ONCE!). The French team Casino is dominating the "Other Races" category. As a team they obtained just over 1000 more UCI-points than the Mapei-Bricobi, who are next best. In the individual ranking of the "other races", the Casino riders occupy third (Jaan Kirsipuu), fourth (Bo Hamburger), fifth (Alberto Elli) and sixth-place (Rodolfo Massi). Michele Bartoli (Asics) obtained the most UCI-points in this category, followed by Andrei Tchmil (Lotto) In the Total Individual Spring Rankings Michele Bartoli (Italy, Asics) has a narrow lead of 16 points over the leader of the UCI-ranking Laurent Jalabert (France, ONCE). Two Belgians Andrei Tchmil (Lotto) and Franck VandenBroucke (Mapei) have more than 100 points. In the Total Team Spring Rankings Casino is the leader with some 500 UCI-points more than the Mapei-Bricobi (which is leading the UCI rankings overall). Remember the spring rankings are not the same thing as the UCI rankings published by the UCI itself. WMore than 1000 UCI-points below Casino are the teams of ONCE, Festina-Lotus and Rabobank. Telekom-ARD, which was the number 3 team last year, is clearly the disappointing team to date this year. They are currently in 10th place and more than 50% of their points are due to the efforts of Erik Zabel. Individual Rankings in World Cup Events by UCI points 1. Michele Bartoli (Ita) Asics 504 2. You can visit Remi's cycling page (in French) at http://www.raunvis.hi.is/~remi/velo.html Matt White UpdateWe recently reported that Matt White had been suspended for 2 months following a positive test for a banned drug - an asthma drug. The actual details are that he was suspended from funding from the Olympic Athletes Program in Australia but he reports that he never got any money from them anyway! The positive test relates to the fact that while he is an asthmatic, he didn't have his certificate with him at the time of the test during the Tour of Tasmania. So in technical terms he was in breach of UCI rules. On a brighter note, Matt has confirmed that both he and Peter Rogers will be riding the Giro this year. The Amore e Vita boss had originally given them a limited schedule of races, but once they had shown their lead-out potential for Magnussen in a Swiss race recently, and then again at Niedersachsen the manager changed the schedule quick-smart. As of last Wednesday, they had 15 race days before the start of the Giro. Beverly, England, Procam 2 Day, April 25-26, 260 kms:Final GC 1. Jon Clay (GB) Brite RT 0.00 2.
