Scott Sunderland in hospital
After being run down by Cees Priem in the TVM car, 35 kms from the
finish of the Amstel Gold Race, Australian Scott Sunderland was
taken to hospital. The found no fractures but kept him overnight
for observation.
At the time of the fall, Scott was in a group of around 30 riders
which included Michele Bartolu and eventual winner, Rolf Jaermann.
He was hit by Priem and then made contact with Belgian Peter Van
Petegem who successfully remained on his bike. As he lay on the
ground, to other team cars came along and had to swerve to avoid
hitting him.
Matt White Suspended for Drugs
Powerful Australian road cyclist Matt White was suspended for two months
after testing positive to salbutimol a common asthma medication. It was
quoted as being a stimulant. Ventolin Inhalers as they are commonly
known are permitted in sport provided a statement of requirement from a
thoracic specialist is provided to official bodies ie UCI, ACF etc.
There are many cyclists who use asthma preparations illegaly. However if
they get noticable benefit from the medication then they should get
expert diagnosis as they probably have some form of asthma which should
be treated and a cover letter provided.
Team home Jack and Jones not so homely..
Kim Plesner Frederiksen from Denmark writes:
Brian Holm has been sent home from the Team home Jack and Jones preparations
to the Amstel Gold Race. According to the team management, Brian is bad for
the teams morale...
Brian himself says, that Professional Cycling Denmark (PCD), who owns the
new Danish team has been very bad for his morale as a pro-rider.
He assures that he has a splendid relationship with the riders on the team,
and will explain further about this "situation" in the nearest future.
The Latest Word from Lance
Lance Armstrong, America's foremost cyclist and a member of the United
States Postal Service Pro Cycling Team, has embarked on a strategically
planned two and a half month training and racing schedule that will be
highlighted by his return to US cycling during late May of 1998.
Armstrong's coach Chris Carmichael, former coach to the US cycling
team at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, states "We've methodically
developed a less traditional regimen for Lance which now affords his current level
of stamina to remain in concert with both his physical and emotional
framework. Emphasizing the latter, coupled with everything Lance has
been through in the past 18 months, we truly believe this is the most
effective way to serve not only his future in the sport. but his always winning
ambitions. Our primary focus will be on one day racing and shorter
stage races in order to achieve greater reserves for use later in the season."
Diagnosed with severe testicular cancer in October of 1996, but
completely overcome by successful chemotherapy treatments and surgery, Armstrong
continues to remain in peak health.
Armstrong's training will take place in Boone, North Carolina beginning
April 17th through April 27th, followed by continuous training in his
home town of Austin, Texas. On May 8th he will break briefly to wed Kristin
Richard also of Austin, Texas, then resume training leading up to his
U.S. cycling comeback at the Sprint 56K Criterium in Austin on May 22nd.
The Sprint 56K Criterium serves as the lead event in the Lance Armstrong
Foundation's IKON Ride for the Roses May 23d and 24th. Armstrong will
then return to training in Austin through June 2d in order to compete in the
Christiana Care Cup in Wilmington, Delaware June 3d; the First Union
Classic in Trenton, New Jersey June 4th; and the First Union U.S.
Professional Championships in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania June 7th.
Thereafter, it is his intention to travel to Europe to participate in
the Tour de Luxembourg June 11th through June 13th and the Vuelta a
Catalunya in Spain June 18th through 25th. Following, he will return to Austin,
at which time plans for upcoming months will be announced.
"By embarking on the training and race schedules Chris and I have
devised," says the 26 year-old Armstrong, "I have absolutely no doubt I'll gain a
re-energized strength and form that will wholeheartedly enable me to
meet the demands of what's ahead."
Lance's race comeback
The U.S. Postal Service Pro Cycling Team's Lance Armstrong, in the midst of
a comeback following successful treatments for cancer, will race in Sunday's
Outdoor Life Network Grand Prix in Atlanta. Following nearly 10 days of
intense training in the hills of North Carolina, Armstrong's decision to
take part in the 119-mile race through Atlanta's midtown and Piedmont Park,
the third of eight races comprising the Tour of America series, came
unexpectedly yesterday.
"After spending the past nine days training harder than ever," Armstrong
said, "I have decided to race the Outdoor Life Network Grand Prix. My
motivation is very high right now and I hope to be competitive. We have a
very strong team in the race and hope to make it back-to-back victories."
The U.S. Postal Service's Marty Jemison won last year's event.
Armstrong began his comeback in Europe in February and placed 14th overall
at the Ruta del Sol stage race in Spain. Armstrong returned to the United
States in early March in order to refocus his plans for the season, which
include competing in the Sprint 56K Criterium in his hometown of Austin, TX,
on May 22, and participating in the Ride for the Roses on May 23, the
signature event of the Lance Armstrong Foundation. Armstrong plans to
compete in the U.S. Pro Championship in Philadelphia on June 7 and intends
to return to Europe for the Tour of Luxembourg and the Tour of Catalunya in
Spain.
Armstrong will join six U.S. Postal Service teammates in Atlanta for the
Outdoor Life Network Grand Prix - Jemison, Frankie Andreu, George Hincapie,
Christian Vande Velde, Jonathan Vaughters and Anton Villatoro.

First Charter Criterium, April 24
Mercury commandingly shifted gears just once and emptied the
vault in the $15,000 First Charter National Bank criterium Friday evening.
America’s dominant pro team slid Julian Dean and Gord Fraser off to a one-two
finish after John Peters had coasted to a special $600 next-to-last lap prime.
The red and yellow jerseys pedaled off with $4,400 in the last three 0.9-mile
laps.
U.S. Postal Service’s only entrant, George Hincapie, took third in the
sprint. He was leading into the second-to-last turn but Fraser got the inside
line to lead Dean in the drag race. The lone Saturn rider, Mike McCarthy, was
on Hincapie’s wheel but ended up sliding off on the corner and collecting only
a major strawberry.
More than 100 riders spun through the western Carolina town, prepping for
Sunday’s $75,000 Outdoor Life Network Atlanta Grand Prix on Sunday. The 50-lap
chase saw no breaks, no solos; just fast racing until Mercury decided it was
time to close out the field.
When Peters moved for the prime he got excellent blocking and Mercury then
flipped into overdrive with Dean and Fraser doing as they pleased.
"I was impressed with the speed of the Mercury boys," Hincapie said.
It was Mercury’s third major win in five days - taking Oregon’s Tour of
Willamette and the 89er crit in Oklahoma last Sunday.
Julian Dean and Gord Fraser of Team Mercury held off US Postal's George
Hincapie at the line for an impressive win at the First Charter National
Bank Criterium in Shelby NC. Dean crossed half a wheel ahead of Fraser
to cap off a strong showing by Mercury on the day. Fraser placed fourth
in a pre-race ITT, and Mercury teammate John Peters broke away from the
field several laps before the criterium finish to take several lucrative
primes.
After Peters was reeled in by the pack on the final turns of the last
lap, Fraser and Dean took over to secure two podium places for Mercury
and solidify their holds on the top two places in the US National Race
Calendar rankings. Hincapie, from nearby Charlotte, NC, was rarely
noted throughout most of the race, but in the final laps he moved into
position to contest the final sprint.
The race was opened by a 1-lap ITT contested by 35 riders. Steve
Sevener (Wisconsin Ginseng) was fastest around the 1.4 km course,
beating Saturn's Mike McCarthy by .25 seconds.
