Vuelta a Chihuahua Internacional - 2.2Mexico, October 7-14, 2007Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 2 - October 8: Chihuahua - Camargo, 147.8 kmHernández takes first win for MexicoBy Monika Prell in Camargo The Mexican Carlos Hernández (Team Canels) has won the second stage of the Vuelta a Chihuahua, ahead of the US American Steven Cozza (Team Slipstream) and the Spaniard Daniel Moreno (Relax GAM). Danny Pate (Team Slipstream) has taken over as the new leader. After one of the great, typical Mexican breakfasts, consisting of a lot of fresh fruits like melon, pineapple, banana and mango, cold or hot tacos, scrambled eggs, a mash of beans and other delicious items, the riders started on Monday morning at 10:00 in Chihuahua, the capital of the state Chihuahua. The 147.8-kilometre stage into the South of the state, to Camargo, went over seemingly endless straight roads. The peloton raced by cotton fields and nut tree goves, passing some typical ranches under the torrid Mexican sun, with temperatures of at least 30 degree centigrades. Attacks were numerous and the peloton worked hard to catch riders like Francisco Mancebo and Santi Pérez (both Relax GAM). By kilometre 34, two riders had escaped from the main peloton: Carlos Hernández (Canels) and Steven Cozza (Slipstream) with Hernández winning the mountain classification from Cozza at kilometre 38. Third was the Canadian Keven Lacombe (Kelly Benefit). After 57 kilometres, Ricardo Samuel Tapia (Arenas Tlaxcala) had crossed the gap to reach the two riders, and together the trio reached an advantage of eight minutes and 15 seconds. Saunier Duval was the first team that began working to reduce the gap to leaders, but later Tecos-Trek and Liberty Seguros took over from the Spanish outfit. However, neither team was able to bridge the gap to the front group. It took Fuerteventura Canarias and later on Relax GAM before the peloton began making any headway on the three riders. With eight kilometres to go, Tapia was dropped from the leading trio, leaving only Cozza and Hernández to fend off the charging peloton. With one kilometre remaining the duo still had a minute on the fast chasing peloton. There was no time to play cat and mouse however as the peloton was closing in quickly. By the time Hernández crossed the line for the win, after beating Cozza in the sprint, the main bunch was upon them and they all received the same time with Daniel Moreno taking third. Hernández was very happy to have won in his home country, in front of the frenetic public that celebrated the event after the end of the stage with folkloric dances and various shows. "I came to this race with the intention to win a stage. It was not easy, and I am very content. Now I would like to fight for the classification of the Metas Volantes [intermediate sprint classification]." The 33 year-old dedicated the victory "to my wife and my three sons."
