- Bicycles
were everywhere in the vicinity of Water St.
- The undercard
for the headline race was the super-entertaining Bike Messenger Relay. This
is, predictably, the last-place entry.
- An ONCE
rider leads an early lap.
- Early
breakaway action.
- Close
to the action.
- An ONCE
and a Saturn up front.
- Right
about here, a break of 25 riders got away and stayed away for the rest
of the afternoon.
- John
Lieswyn of 7up, larger than life.
- Danny
Pate of Prime Alliance/TIAA-CREF moves to the fore. Pate was an absolute
monster today, powering the break for laps at a time.
- The break
dives into the corner off the back straightaway.
- A colorful
bunch corners hard.
- Danny
Pate again, hammering.
- OK, the
action is starting to heat up. The peloton strings out, chasing the break.
- Pate,
once again.
- A 7up
leads a Sierra Nevada and a Jelly Belly. Ironic that all three of these
teams are sponsored by things that professional cyclists can't eat or drink
during the season.
- With
about 10 laps to go, Olympic track cycling gold medalist Marty Nothstein
took off on a solo break.
- US Postal's
Tony Cruz bridged up to Nothstein with ONCE's Jose Azevedo and the three looked
to have a nice gap...
- ...but
the chase group got closer on the next lap...
- ...and
the next. The 20-something chasers would duel it out in a sprint. Storm
clouds were beginning to gather (the literal kind, as well as the figurative
ones).
- The pace
quickened for the final laps.
- The riders
go faster still.
- With
about 5 laps to go, a huge gust of wind howled though the concrete canyon,
toppling a 100-foot section of barricade, just missing the riders. Course
marshals jumped out to right the barricade as the race sped on.
- With
raindrops beginning to fall, the sprint is on!
- As the
racers crossed the finish line, the skies just unleashed, sending fans
scurrying into the cover of office buildings' porticoes.
- Nothstein,
after a DNF here last year, won the group sprint to take the race. His
postrace interviews had to be conducted from the safety of an umbrella.

- The largely
unrepresented teams of Schroeder Iron, Jelly Belly and Colavita Bolla
attempt to bring back the break of 17 riders.
- By the
half-way mark, however, the peloton were already half a lap behind.
- A few
pleasantries being exchanged between Antonio Cruz (US Postal) and Victor
Rapinski (Saturn).
- The twisted
face of pain from a Jelly Belly rider.
- The four
TIAA-CREF riders in the winning break took turns to test the legs of their
companions on rival teams.
- The lanky
figure of Alex Candelario (TIAA-CREF) propels the break to victory.
- The TIAA-CREF
riders turn up the heat to create an unbridgeable gap to the peloton.
- The break
single file as they snake their way through the back streets of NYC.
- At 19
laps to go, Marty Nothstein (Navigators) takes an unexpected flyer.
- The remnants
of the break began to worry when Antonio Cruz (US Postal) made the junction
to join Nothstein, with Azevedo (ONCE-Eroski) also in for the ride.
- As the
sole 7UP-NutraFig rider, John Lieswyn was fighting an uphill battle.
- The trio
of Nothstein, Cruz and Azevedo appeared to crack the NYCCC wide open.
- But once
TIAA-CREF got powerhouse Pate pounding away with Horner joining the chase,
it was curtains for the attack.
- The chase
by the remnants of the peloton was a fruitless one.
- Alvaro
Gonzalez De Galdeano (ONCE-Eroski) takes a sip once the break containing
Cruz is reeled in.
- Jonathan
Erdelyi (Ofoto-Lombardi Sports) begins to tire in the closing moments
of the race.
- Danny
Pate (TIAA-CREF) was largely responsible for the average speed of the
race almost reaching 50 km/h.
- Antonio
Cruz (US Postal) lacked strength in numbers with Antonio Cruz the sole
representative in the break.
- A Lemond
Fitness/Captain Cra-Z-Soap rider feels the pinch of a 70 kilometre breakaway...
- ... and
as a consequence, Larkin loses contact with the break.
- It's
a struggle just to finish once you've blown.
- The peloton
were helpess with so many big guns in the break.
- Jose
Azevedo (ONCE-Eroski) continues to force a relentless pace.
- A couple
of weary faces start to appear.
- And it's
Danny Pate once again coming to the front in an attempt to set up the
finish for team-mate David Clinger.
- A welcome
sight - the final stretch.
- Chris
Horner (Saturn) attempts to set up the sprint for their sprinter Victor
Rapinski, but big Marty Nothstein sits there, waiting to pounce.
- A sign
of a storm on its way - large gusts of wind creating havoc with spectators'
hairdos.
- A sign
of a smart rider - Eugene Boronow (GS Mengoni) senses the storm, and decides
to head home.
- A sign
of a not-so-smart rider - a Colavita Bolla rider gets an early shower.
- The price
you pay when the team bus parks miles away from the finish.
