Richard Sachs Women's Team: From 'cross to road

Connecticut-based framebuilder Richard Sachs will sponsor a women's Elite road team for the 2003 season, under the aegis of his Connecticut Yankee Bicycle Club/Richard Sachs Team.

Richard Sachs has been building frames since 1972. In 1996, Sachs turned his attention to building cyclocross frames in addition to his highly sought-after road frames. This lead to the formation of the CYBC/Richard Sachs Cyclocross Team, which quickly became one of the most dominant squads in the United States.

Members of the CYBC/Richard Sachs team have stood on the podium at the Cyclocross SuperCup and National Championships more than 20 times, and have won at least one National Championship every year; most recently Jonathan Page's 2003 Men's Elite gold medal.

In addition, CYBC/Richard Sachs has sponsored Page for the past three European cyclocross seasons, garnering solid and improving results with each passing year. In 2003, Sachs will expand his sponsorship to include a Women's Elite road team, including former National Champions Katrina Davis (team captain) and Alicia Genest, both arriving from the powerhouse 2002 Trek Plus team, along with former Junior Worlds Team member and U23 standout Leah Toffolon from the 2002 Freddie Fu squad and stage race specialist Catherine Powers from the 2002 Terry Precision team.

"I've been sponsoring cycling teams for over 20 years, but this will be my first all-women's team," said Sachs. "A lot of people helped me get started in cycling and I see sponsorship as my way of giving back to the sport."

"The make-up of a team is very important to me. How well team members get along and work together as a team is more important than how strong they are individually. It's important for the team to have fun while they're racing. These four women have formed a tight, focused team with strong overall skills and similar mindsets ä we're looking forward to another strong and enjoyable season."

The CYBC/Richard Sachs Women's Elite Team will race the full New England road circuit, with appearances at the major Northeastern USA stage races and criteriums including the Fitchburg-Longsjo Classic, the Tour de 'Toona Stage Race, the Shaun Thornton Memorial Jiminy Peak Road Race, the Tour of Connecticut and the Tour of Vermont.

In addition, the team will ride the Capital Cup, Clarendon Cup, and CapTech Classic, along with the Tour of Somerville, Liberty Classic and Chris Thater Memorial Races.
