2003 Team rosters

Half-Fast Velo

Half-Fast Velo (www.halffastvelo.com) has announced its 2003 roster. Half-Fast Velo (say it quickly - Ed) is a regional racing team based in Portland, Oregon. The team brings an experienced group of masters riders with an eye for the line and a focus on philanthropy.

According to team spokesman Jonathan Puskas, "Half-Fast Velo was born out of the notion that amateur bike racing in the U.S. has become far too stodgy at times. Far too sponsored. Far too serious. We don't want to play that way."

The team's motto is "Amistades-Victorias-Cervezas" ("Friendship-Victory-Beer") and the team's aims are to race, have fun and give a little back to the community. Says Puskas, "Our service pyramid (corporate geek-speak) will consist of: Throwing a race or two, introducing non-racers to the sport, and a team goal of 600 volunteer hours at cancer awareness events in 2003."

Here's what the team has to say for itself:

Just what is Half-Fast Velo serious about then?

Simple: Race your bike and have fun doing it.

Half-Fast Velo is serious about riding their bikes...and doing it well. We take racing and riding hard seriously, but we don't take ourselves too seriously. We aspire to conduct ourselves like human beings simply doing the best we can at our chosen hobby. After all, this is amateur bike racing, not the Tour de France.

Second, we are serious about fun. We aspire to share countless smiles, many beers, and occasional hijinks with our teammates, family, friends, and fellow riders. If we aren't finishing a weekend of racing revitalized, then we're probably doing something wrong.

Does this mean Half-Fast Velo is not interested in winning? Of course not! We feel that winning comes naturally when a team is doing their best, having fun and working as a cohesive unit.

Finally, we are serious about service. Service to our fellow racers and to our local community. Bike racing is a gift. A little community service can help us reflect that there are broader issues in this World than how many $5 primes we win. Our service pyramid (corporate geek-speak) will consist of: Throwing a race or two, introducing non-racers to the sport, and a team goal of 600 volunteer hours at cancer awareness events in 2003.
