C-U Racing brings criterium to Champaign

For the first time since 1999, criterium racing returns to Champaign, Illinois on June 7, 2003. "C-U Racing" is a new team formed for the dual purposes of fostering the general cycling community in Champaign-Urbana and sparking renewed interest in bike racing through a high quality criterium experience in resurgent downtown Champaign.

The inaugural C-U Racing event will take place around beautiful West Side Park, adjacent to downtown pubs, clubs, restaurants and coffee shops. "It's a fantastic setting for a race," says team President Mark Althouse, "and the support from the community has been overwhelming." Inexpensive course-side lodging with balcony views of the finishing straight is just one of the unique attractions that will bring racers back year after year.

Working toward the goal of increasing the numbers of local racers, C-U Racing members emphasize a welcoming and friendly attitude on local training rides. The first C-U Racing roster of 33 members includes 4 women and 4 juniors, added to an experienced group of Masters and local university students of all racing categories. The team, racing unsponsored in 2003, intends to race a road and MTB schedule including the St. Louis, Chicago, and Indianapolis metro areas.
