Racers battle each other and remnants of Tropical Storm Barry

Racers at the Massanuttten Hoo Ha!, the Virginia State Championships for 2007, woke up unexpectedly to overcast, dreary skies Sunday morning. Soon after the rains began and would not let up for the duration. Tropical Storm Barry, or at least what was left of it, had taken a more western course than anticipated.
The trails started out in great shape due to recent dry conditions, but the rocks became slick and after several categories had passed over the trails, the non-rocky portions of the trails began to develop a thick coating of mud that would make for peanut buttery conditions for others racing in their wake.
Jeff Schalk (Trek VW East) won the men's race with a time of 2.07.34 in front of teammate Todd Helmick and Travis Livermon. Carolyn Popovic (Trek VW East) and Johanna Kraus (Charlottesville Racing Club) were the only pro/expert women to finish the course. The rest of the women got off course after some confusion at a point where the sport / expert courses split. This was the first year sports and experts raced different routes.
In the XXC (extra long cross country), Ben Klimas won in a time of 4.31.58 over local Mike Carpenter and Pennsylvanian Lee Sornson. The top two men were separated by less than two minutes after four and a half hours of racing. West Virginian Kristy Lanier won in 5.22.21, just over nine minutes ahead of Cheryl Sornson.
The singlespeed race saw a battle of Harrisonburg locals. Tim Richardson finished ahead of Kirby Walke (SMBC) and Ryan Fawley.
The unusual amount of DNFs in the Expert and XXC categories was due to many racers getting lost at the sport / expert split and other places on the course where arrows were downed or blown away due to the storm.
Special thanks go out the Shenandoah Mountain Bike Club (SMBC), which has partnered for several years to build and maintain trails at Massanutten, including the newly built Upper Ravine trail which debuted in this year's edition of the race.
