Cohutta 100 kicks off National Ultra-Endurance Series

Tennessee hosted the first 100 mile race of the seven-race National Ultra-Endurance (NUE) Series on Saturday, April 21. Chris Eatough (Trek / VW) won the men's race ahead of Tinker Juarez while last year's third place finisher Danielle Musto (Slingshot) was victorious in a sprint finish the women's race this year.
The one-lap course, located in the Smokey Mountains, was characterized by opening and closing singletrack sections with 70 miles (112.6 km) of gravel fireroad in between. Warm, dry conditions made the predominantly road-based course made it go by even quicker. The course was described as hilly - up and down all day, but with climbs shorter than other mountainous 100-milers (161 kms) like the Shenandoah Mountain 100. Racers started and ended at Ocoee Whitewater Center, site of the 1996 Olympic kayaking events.
Eatough initially pulled away from his competition in the early singletrack section of the race, but on the road, a small group eventually formed and caught him. That group included racers like Juarez and Brandon Draugelis (Bare Naked / Cannondale). Eatough later attacked and got away for good around the midpoint of the race.
"It was the fastest 100 mile mountain bike race," said Eatough referring to the quick times. "I rode a lot of it by myself. I probably rode eight miles at beginning and middle with small groups. The rest of it, I did by myself.
"From mile 50 (km 80.5) onward, I was by myself. A small group came up to us on the road. I broke things up from there, and it was pretty much every man for himself."
Eatough finished about fifteen minutes ahead of Juarez, but he never knew the full magnitude of his gap, so he had to push the entire distance. "I knew it was a least a minute and a half because of places I could see back on the climbs, but beyond that I didn't know," said Eatough, who rode with confidence and good fortune, meaning no mechanicals, to victory.
Eatough intends to race several other races in the NUE series, although he is unlikely to do them all due to schedule conflicts with his specialty 24 hour events, which he will continue to race.
The women's race saw a much tighter battle. Musto took victory over Carey Lowery (Outdoor Store) in a sprint finish. Her margin of victory was only two seconds.
"It was one of the best finishes ever. There was a climb, everyone was screaming for us. I won by a wheel length. I've never had to sprint for a finish in my life, let alone at the end of 100 miles. It made it that much better," said Musto.
Musto passed a woman to assume the lead in the early singletrack section, but then yo-yoed with third place for awhile. From mile 65, she led the rest of the race until Lowery surprised her and caught her at the very end. The two women have raced against each other before - twice last year, Lowery won and once Musto won, so Musto knew she was in for a tough fight.
Musto will race a few other 100 milers including the Lumberjack 100, Mohican100, and Wilderness 101. She's also preparing for the 24 hour solo nationals.
