MTB index page for all MTB content Endurance 100 (NUE #6) - NEPark City, Utah, USA, August 25, 2007Eatough and Riley win in UtahBy Harlan Price The sixth race of the National Ultra Endurance series (NUE) returned to the alpine altitude of the West for the Endurance 100 in Park City Utah. Chris Eatough (Trek/ VW) successfully locked up the NUE championship by winning his fourth race of the series. In the women's race, Amanda Riley revenged a recent second place finish at the Leadville 100 by earning the top podium spot. Racers started their day in the dark, wearing jackets and riding uphill into the black cold for 40 minutes. Some chose to go out with lights while others relied on their night vision to navigate the gravel road and single track climbs out of Park City. As the riders worked to tick off the six loops and the temperatures rose into the 80s (degrees Fahrenheit), racers began to steadily drop out in the face of the 16,500 feet of climbing and relentless singletrack. That much vertical trail turned the E100 into a race of attrition. For some, the race was unintentionally shortened by vague course markings and lap instructions. The second time Erika Tieszen (Giant) went off course she decided to bushwack back to the car after racing for over nine hours in second place. David "Tinker" Juarez (Cannondale) was disqualified after not realizing that the third loop was supposed to be repeated, before moving on to loops four and five. Eatough's winning time of 9:47:22 came after being paced most of the day by the Breckenridge 100 winner, Josh Tostado (Giant). The trio of Tostado, Eatough and Juarez rolled 60 miles together before Juarez fell off the tempo being set by Breckenridge resident Tostado, who is used his high altitude living. East Coaster Eatough started conservatively in order to acclimate to the 6,000 - 8,000 foot altitude range and with the expectation that the last two big climbs would be good places to attack. "When he smelled a hint of weakness at about mile 70, Chris went for it, and I had no answer," Tostado said after the race. In a race where only 23 of 55 racers finished, with some in the 16 hour range, it was an accomplishment just to get to the line. When asked what draws people to the 100 mile format Eatough replied, "The appeal is similar to an Iron-man triathlon. It's an epic day with mishaps, adventures and in the end just finishing is a challenge." In the women's race, Amanda Riley (Athletes Place) continued her strong 100 miler performances of the year with a first place time of 11:27:20, over two and a half hours better than second place. Riley rode alone most of the day while her top competitor, Erika Tieszen (Giant) found herself going off course enough times to throw in the towel at about mile 80. That left the second place spot open to Ellen Gutherie (Vanguard Cycling), and third stayed empty because no other women were able to finish the grueling course. Normally a short distance cross-country racer, Riley has shifted her late season focus this year to Western 100 milers with a win at the Creampuff 100 in Oregon and a second last weekend at the Leadville 100 last weekend. Her new interest centers more around the different mindset needed to meet the challenge of a dirty century. "In the 100 milers, you go through so many different levels of where your mind is at and you can really get into the race. In the short cross country races, it's over so soon it's more of a blur." Whether or not she plans on doing the NUE series next year is still up in the air. The NUE series final is this weekend at the most popular East Coast hundred, The Shenandoah 100, outside of Harrisonburg, Virginia. On the line will be last year's series winner Harlan Price (Independent Fabrication), with this years current leader Eatough and 2006 Tour de France winner Floyd Landis.
