The fifth and final round of the downhill mountain bike competition in the 2003 National Series was held at Hunua Forest (one hour south of Auckland) yesterday, Saturday, March 8.

The shortest course in the series at only 1.2km gave some fast finishing times with Nankin Rankin (Levin) coming in at 2.09.10 to win the Pro-Elite downhill title for his third consecutive year.

Unfortunately for Tim Nelson (Nelson), who was tied first equal with Rankin going into the last round, broke his elbow practising last week and was unable to race, leaving him second place overall. The young Justin Leov (18 years) had a great race yesterday coming in only four seconds behind Rankin and earning him third position overall - something he is very "stoked" to have achieved at his first year of Pro-Elite competition.

New Zealand's top woman downhill rider and ranked seventh in the world, Vanessa Quin (Tauranga), made her first appearance at the National Series in Auckland after a serious injury to her neck forced her to take a break from racing. Quin was happy with her race yesterday in the Senior men category - she used it as training before she leaves on the 1st April to prepare for international competition, notably the World Cup Series later on this year.

The young Scarlett Hagen (Queenstown) who turns 16 next week, won her third consecutive junior title yesterday and is looking forward to the one-off National Champs in Blenheim early April and then will focus hard on training for the World Cup Series in Europe.
