National DH MTB goes bush

The fifth round of the National MTB DH series hit the sleepy Northern Tablelands town of Nundle on the weekend when 118 DH riders converged on the town. This was, in itself not remarkable, but when you consider that the Elite Men had the likes of Graves, Rennie and Kovorik you had the idea that the weekend was going to be something special.

The course, situated on a property just outside the town, offered all the things that DH'ers love, glorious views from the start and fast flowing single track to the finish, which coupled with warm weather, after some well received rain the days before, produced some spectacular close and furious racing. Come race day, everyone was pumped to do their best.

In the end the Elite men race was strongly held by Jarod Graves who was over seven seconds faster than second place, Nathan Rennie followed closely by Chris Kovarik in the qualifying. In the finals the gap reduced to three seconds between first and second but Graves was clearly on fire.

In the Elite Women race Tai Lee Muxlow confirmed her status as the Nation's best female DH'er with a blistering run of 3m 25s in a disappointingly small field.

The Junior, U19 Men, race was won by Riley Donaldson after qualifying race leader, Lindsey Klein had a terrible final run.

The venue offers great potential for further high level events. A big thanks goes out to all the people who made the event happen, particularly Neil Scrutton and Stuart McNaughton from Hunter Valley MBC.

The next National event is the XC #5 at Whittlesea on the 15-16 March and the Final events of the Series are at Fellcrag (Qld) on the 28-30 March (XC and DH) and 29th March for Bike Trials in South Australia.
