Stage 2 - March 16: Undoolya Road - Ross River, 90 km

The punishment continued today for the field of 65 as they rode out at a feverish pace heading to Ross River in the longest stage of the tour.

Familiar faces formed the leading pack as Chris Jongewaard, Marcus Amtutz and leader Jaap Viergever averaged 40km on the corrugated roads. But this would be a stage for the dutch pair of Tommy Velthuyzen and Jaap Viergever to forget as Velthuyzen flatted early and lost over 10 minutes. Further up Viergever had double flatted and was losing time rapidly to Chris Jongewaard.

Viergever's luck didn't change as he amassed five punctures and rolled the final 5m through N'Dhala Gorge on a flat tyre. Jongewaard made it through the savage conditions to claim another victory 3 minutes ahead of Amstutz and crucially 23 minutes ahead of Viergever. Jongewarrd now wears the leaders jersey, 10 minutes clear of Amstutz.

Viergever claims his race is finished but with four more equally brutal stages to go this race is far from over. Jill Burston has a commanding lead of the women and is showing most of the male field how it's done coming 18th overall. Tomorrow the riders cover 48km starting at the historic Alice Springs Telegraph station.
