Rain topples elite mountain bikers

A sudden downpour of rain affected the top placings in the Elite Men's field at the National Mountain Bike Series Final Round in Beaudesert today. Gold Coast based Chris Kovarik, ranked third in the World, had to settle for third place after rain made the track more difficult. Nathan Rennie, a former World Junior Champion proved his class by riding 1:43.68, beating Toowoomba's Jared Graves by just over half a second. The final thirteen riders who had been the fastest riders in the first run were hit with a heavy afternoon shower which made conditions more dangerous causing all of them to reduce their speed.

Kovarick rode second quickest on the first seeding run behind Cairns rider Michael Hannah.

Series leader, Shane Wode from the Gold Coast, maintained enough points during the series to take out the overall series win after finishing 13th in today's event.

In the women's field Talitha Fitzgerald had it sewn up beating Joanne Fox for second. Mountain bike's pin-up girl, Niki Gudex, was ranked second in the Downhill Series but decided not to race after her win in the Cross Country yesterday.

Lindsey Klein took out the U/19 event in 1:45.50 beating Riley Donaldson and David McLaughlin finished third. McLaughlin however had secured a top 276 points to take out the Overall Series with Klein second and Donaldson third.

Many of the top downhill riders leave this week to compete in the American Sea Otter Classic and NORBA events as well as the World Cup Series.
