Stage 2 - February 1: Que River, 23 km

Taberlay and Patterson in command on Day 1

A quick dash for cash started Wildside MTB this morning with 260 mountain bike riders from across the nation and overseas, lined up for the challenge. Tasmania turned on the weather with temperatures 10 degrees below average for this time of year with riders rugged up and ready to race.

Sid Taberlay, last year's winner took no time to establish himself as race favourite taking out both stage one and stage two of the event on day one.

It appears the Tasmanians are dominating the event at this stage with perhaps local knowledge lending a hand with Eleanor Patterson taking out both stages in the open women's.

With the field more than doubling this year, riders seem impressed with the good mix of terrain and overall conditions. The Valley of Darkness proved tiresome with riders having to dismount and walk their bikes for 500 metres to defeat the climb.

Tomorrow will see competitors face their toughest challenge with some of the most technical riding and the biggest climbs. The ratio of competition to cruise is also much greater than on other days as they pass through the Stirling Valley and Montezuma Falls stages.
