Houltham and Pryde sweep series' least technical course

The Tokoroa course wound its way through Big Rock MTB Park, which is about ten minutes west of Tokoroa. There were fast-flowing descents with steady climbs on mostly single track through old pine forest. Each lap was 6km long with a maximum altitude of 340m. This track has the lowest percentage technical, only 15 percent, of all five rounds. (Percentage technical refers to how much the rider must concentrate on the track). There were 220 competitors at Tokoroa and they generally enjoyed this track, although some would have liked some more hill climbs.

There was a good crowd of spectators - many watched at the 'Gnarly' which is the second big downhill with a hard left turn for the competitors when they reach the bottom.

Women's Pro-Elite Sadie Parker-Wynard took an early lead but unfortunately had to pull out due to a bad attack of hayfever leaving the race to Susy Pryde (Silver Commonwealth Medallist, 2:03:28) followed closely by the National Series 2002 Winner Robyn Wong (Wellington) in a time of 2 hrs 4 mins 23 secs. Ingrid Allsop-Bell (Auckland) came in third (2:11:06).

In the Men's Pro-Elite Stuart Houltham (Taupo, 2001 & 2002 National Series Winner, 2:03:18) came in first - 1 minute 41 seconds ahead of the NZ National Champ Jason Clements (Levin, 2:04:56) and Marcas Roy of Te Anau rode extremely well to finish in third position (2:07:58) just ahead of Wayne Hiscock (Upper Hutt, 2:09:05).
