Rankin takes another close one; junior Hagen is fastest woman

Courtesy NZMBA

The Pro-Elite men's category saw more nail biting competition between team mates Nathan Rankin and Tim Nelson with just over a second between them. Rankin (Levin) just managing to even the score to win this round in a time of 3:48s.08. Nelson (Christchurch) came in second in 3:49.25. They now each have two wins and two seconds, making an exciting fifth and final round in Auckland - the decider for the 2003 National Series Winner. Rankin is hoping to win the title for the third year and Nelson aims to make his come back after a year off a winning one!

John Kirkcaldie (Wellington) finished third in a time of 3:49.98. This is Kirkcaldie's second downhill race of the series - he is NZ's top ranked international downhill rider. Kirkcaldie, the North American (NORBA) downhill champion for 2001 and 2002, finished just over seven seconds behind Rankin at the Nelson round for third and this time under two seconds behind second place getter Nelson. It's not taking him long to get back into form. Kirkcaldie is not eligible for series points as he has not pre entered for the National Series. He entered on the day for both Nelson and Rotorua and is using these races as training.

In the Junior Men category Craig Pattle (Rotorua) had an amazing race finishing in a time of 3:59.26s to win his class and finish ninth overall.

Scarlett Hagen, the junior from Queenstown, finished in a great time of 4:36.31 which gave her 55th position overall, out of more than 170 competitors. To highlight how well Hagen did, there were only seven other female competitors and the next woman was Kirsten Drabble (Wellington) finishing in a time of 5:14.16s which put her in 122nd overall.

The Next DH race is the Final at Auckland in the Hunua Forest. Practice day is Friday 7th March, 9am-5pm. Race day is Saturday 8th March. Expert Races commence 11:00am. Pro-Elite Race commence 2:00pm.
