Phil Anderson romps in the bush!

Aside from an Emu who tried to run Anderson down with 50 kms to go, the salty old dog at 44 yrs, won the 6 hours 15 minute stage in a two up sprint with last year's victor and current race leader Jaap Viergever. The two were a part of an seven man break which went away after 60 kms.
The course was not only grueling at 187 kms, it was hot and dusty. The silty Bull Dust was so thick several cars went off the road and certainly a few cyclists came unstuck. The Australian wildlife was all about including snakes, kangaroos, emus and a few domestics too, such as horses and Brahmans! There was one big Brahman Bull who took more than a little interest in the two wheeled types. And a horse who ran along side the break away seven for a good kilometre. It was all happening.
Team Kelly rider Øyvind Âas, who was also in the seven man break, experienced technical trouble and had to chase back to his group for 30 minutes behind the cars. Normally that is no problem but in these dusty conditions it was not only choking him it was blinding him. When he reached the group again with 30 kilometres to go he attacked! Aas finished fifth in today's stage, same as stage 2.
As for the women folk, Mieke Deroo arrived relatively fresh at 7 hours 21 mins off Anderson's blistering time and dropped even her own male team mates! She is riding so strongly she has left the other women well in her dust. Carrie Edwards from the USA has leapt into second place over Gabriele Inzinger who was struggling over this distance.
Anderson sported a big toothy grin as he came across the line with a proper roadie victory salute. He's still got it!
