Stage 11 : September 21, Cooktown - Daintree, 140 km

Anderson Tears it up in the Tropics!

By Christi Valentine-Anderson

Now this was a proper mountain bike stage with rocky descents and leg searing climbs. There were ten big climbs between 1500 meters and 3000 meters long, in the second half of the stage. The parcours was lined with tropical foliage as well as the odd Goanna. The first 73 kilometres were composed of an undulating rocky track which dramatically changed to the steep and rugged 30% climbs which make up the famous Creb Track through the Daintree.

Anderson who said last evening, "I wish this race was one week longer, because I am definitely riding into good form" put his goods on the line today, going away with the usual suspects from the 50 kilometre mark. Anderson continued to astound the field by riding over the heavily technical course with relative ease, and on the front, but not the rivet! This is Anderson's first mountain bike race ever and first stage race in 9 years. He is also between 10 and 15 yrs older than the top ten men on General Classification. He's a real live Legend that Phil Anderson!

A bit of bad luck for Victorian woman Debra Eason who had to stop today due to severe dehydration and gastro. She is one very disappointed gal as she was surely coming third. Mieke Deroo on the other hand, has sealed her second victory overall at the finish of the last proper stage of the 2002 Crocodile Trophy.

Jaap Viergever is now also sitting quite comfortably in first place for his fourth Crocodile Trophy victory. Jaap and his Tom Taylor team of three men have dominated this grueling 1500 km stage race through hell, from the first pedal stroke. They will surely be planning next year´s campaign already. Incidentally, the group of four riding with Anderson all waited with ten kilometres to the finish as Anderson changed his wheel after he punctured. Truly sportsman like behaviour.

Phil Anderson and Australian team mate David Olle were also overheard making plans of their own for next year, where the team should also include the missing Traversoni and a few other retired roadies from the pro peloton. Olle was enjoying the technical stuff today though and requested that his fiance Emma, " Get me a meat pie. I am starving."

At km 70, Ema did as requested but could only source a sausage roll, which she promptly delivered. Personally I couldn´t think of anything worse to be kicking around in my stomach over this gut wrencher of a stage.

The field of finishers is looking quite relieved to have made it thus far and are all smiling a little as they roll over the line.
