Berchtold takes the downhill

By Martin Whitely, Global Racing

Global Racing's Markolf Berchtold of Brazil won the Pan American Men's Downhill Championship yesterday in Chile, beating top competition from all over the continent. It was an even sweeter victory for Markolf, who won the junior title back in 1997, because he was unable to compete in 2001 after breaking his leg in training for the same title.

"I'm so happy to win this important Championship. My mechanic Monkey came from the USA to help me out and he had the Orange 223 bike so well set up, I felt great on the course. I was doing really well in the final, but then I crashed. Fortunately I had enough lead before the crash that I still managed to win by half a second", said an excited Markolf immediately after the race.
