National points series #3

Ballinastoe Woods, Co. Wicklow, June 16, 2002

Kinning beats soccer and mud

Glen Kinning won the third round of this years National Points Series on Sunday despite stiff competition from the football. Ireland's game threatened to postpone the race and did manage to put off some riders but for those who turned out the rain was waiting to get them. The weather was more like a day in March with wind and rain sweeping in and low cloud cover making visibility very hard on the fast descents.

Promoting club Sorrento managed to create a fairly weather-resistant course considering the amount of rain we have had over the past month. With plenty of climbing the course was a real test of fitness and slippery descents tested the riders' ability to negotiate wet roots.

Kinnning dominated once again in the Expert race with Simon Loughlin having a good ride to finish less than two minutes behind him. Knud Jenson showed once again that he is the fittest "old fella" in mountain biking in Ireland by finishing over 14 minutes ahead of second place Geoff Copeland of Apollo CT.

In the Junior race Lewis Ferguson (XMTB) took first place, once again showing why he is one to watch for the future. In the other races Niall Davis won the Sports race, Robert Lamont was victorious in the Masters, while Neil McGimpsey, Chris Jensen and Andy McCullough came first in the U12's, U14's and U16's.
