MTB index page for all MTB content DownhillLes Gets, France , September 07-08, 2002Peat and Chausson win World Cup finals & overall championshipsJust one week ago Steve Peat (Team Orange England) rolled across the finish line to take a disappointing 2nd place in the World Championship. But on Saturday afternoon, all was forgotten as Peat took out both the last round of the World Cup and the overall title. A very muddy course welcomed riders early on in the week for practice, but with conditions improving over the week, a perfect day and a perfect course greeted the competitors for the final days racing. The racing was on from the word go, with both Peat and Aussie Chris Kovarik (Intense Cycles) trying to rack up point for the overall title, but when it came time for the finals, a disappointing run of 3:43 from Kovarik meant that Peat would only need to finish inside the top 20 to take out the title. And so he did. Finishing in a time of 3.38.03, Peat was half a second clear of second place winner Fabien Barel (Maxxis-MSC) who narrowly missed out on the top spot with a time of 3.38.61. Barel's time was all the more impressive due to his crash just after the intermediate time check and his two crashes in the semi-finals. Third place went to World Championship Nicolas Vouilloz (Vouilloz Racing Team) who crossed the line 1.05 seconds behind Peat. Anne-Caroline Chausson (Volvo-Cannondale) just keeps on winning. Last week it was her 10th World Championships, this week it's her 5th World Cup title. Her only disappointment was that this was her last ride on the now defunct Volvo-Cannondale team, who have decided to concentrate fully on yacht racing. Anne-Caro crossed the line in 4.05.51, a full 3.57 seconds clear of second place holder Sabrina Jonnier (Intense Cycles). Fionna Griffiths (Ancillotti Zeal) took 3rd place in a time of 4.09.08. Tracy Moseley (Team Kona) and Marielle Saner (Team Global Racing took fourth and fifth respectively.
