MTB index page for all MTB content Cross CountryLes Gets, France , September 07-08, 2002Hesjedal, Fullana win at Les Gets, Meirhaeghe, Dunlap win overallWhile the downhillers got a perfect course, heavy rain on Saturday night meant that the cross country riders had to deal with a wet and sticky course. But Canadian espoir Ryder Hesjedal (Subaru Gary Fisher) took it all in his stride when he racked up his first World Cup win as well as taking out the overall U/23 title. Ryder, who a week ago took home the bronze at the World's, was ecstatic over his win, and so he should be, as he led the field all day. Filip Meirhaeghe (Specialized) was almost guaranteed the overall title, having only to place higher than Bart Brentjens (Giant Bicycle) to take the title. And with Bart's crash prior to the World's last week leaving him off the pace, Filip only needed to ride a safe and consistent race to take home the title. After a race where first place could have gone to anyone in the lead group, it was Ryder Hesjedal who got the top spot, followed by Christoph Sauser (Volvo Cannondale) at 29 seconds, Filip Meirhaeghe at 49 seconds took third with Kashi Leuchs and Roland Green finishing off the top five. In the Women's, Marga Fullana (Orbea) took out her third world Cup win of the season, winning by over a minute and a half from Anna Szafraniec (Lotto), while Sabine Spitz (Merida Int.) placed third two minutes and 41 seconds behind the leader. Fullana lead the field from the start, pulling away from the rest of the competitors at every chance. Back in the field, the battle for second place raged, with Spitz, Szafraniec and Alison Sydor (Trek-Volkswagen) all taking turns at second place, but none holding it for too long. By the race's end, Szafraniec managed to gain second ahead of Sabine Spitz and Alison Sydor, while Alison Dunlap (Luna Chix) came in 5th and managed to take out the overall title ahead of Swiss rider Petra Henzi (Fischer K2).
