MTB index page for all MTB content Mont 24 Hours of Canberra - NECanberra, Australia, October 13-14, 2002A lot can happen in 24 hoursby Paul Mirtschin Twenty four hours was all it took to take last year's course from pristine singletrack to a smouldering wreck at the start of this year. But after ten months of magic from the singletrack fairies, what has been said to be the hardest 24 Hour course yet was put to the test. 1402 riders, including 46 solo male and 11 solo female, started the Mont Australian 24 hour race in sunny Canberra on a very dry and dusty 17.9km course. With some sections of last year's course and an entirely new section on Mt. Stromlo, the race saw some of the best (and worst) mountain bikers in Australia take on pain, tiredness and in some instances hangovers to see who was the best. And the title went to "Yeti and the Bunnymen", a team consisting of Paul Rowney, Trent Lowe, Rob Eva and Perren Delacour. And with a line-up like that, it's no wonder they were the best. "Yeti and the Bunnymen" managed 30 laps in 24:08:00, an average of just over 48 minutes per lap. They also took out the fastest lap time of 42.14. Solo winners were Joshua Street with a total of 23 laps in 24.22.15 and Rosmary King with 18 laps in 24.34.25, both amazing results considering the dusty conditions they both endured. Slowest lap award goes to Melissa Crawfors (Riding Miss Daisy) who took 16.06.45 to complete her lap. I'm guessing she either had a bit of a rest in there, or rode into town for a movie and a meal. The "What A Goose" award goes to the guy who crossed the line at the 23:59:59 mark and had to complete another lap for his team to finish, while the runner up goes to an unnamed rider who decided to start a fast lap from inside the transition tent (a no-ride zone) and ended up in a big pile when he clipped a pedal on the wheel of another rider who was waiting to transition. The no ride rule applies for that very reason I think. The number crunchers at Canberra Off Road Cyclists tell us that the total distance ridden over the event was 114,200km, just under three times the circumference of the earth, with a total lap count of 6,380 laps. The solo perspectiveBy Mel Venn Well, what a weekend! I've got to say I was skeptical when I heard it would be so big. Having been at all 4 races now, I initially wondered how different it was going to be from the first year and 300 riders total. Apart from the post-race gridlock in the carpark, I think it all went brilliantly. My race went a lot better than I expected, given my very poor preparation. Changing job situations, moving house and general slackness all contributed to my not doing any regular riding or rides over 50km for the last four months or so, but obviously the somewhat sporadic commuting has helped me keep my base fitness up a bit. Seems to be one case where being stubborn and really hard on myself pays off. The pre-ride of the course on Friday afternoon had me a little worried, mainly because I had heaps of trouble keeping my heart rate down on the long climb. I decided before the race to make a concerted effort to keep my HR under 80 percent, to spin up the longer climbs in granny, and to keep my cadence over 80 when I wasn't in the sniggly bits (I figured if it works for Lance, maybe it'd work for me!). I think this strategy paid off, and I ended up having decent endurance even if I didn't have the speed to go with it. I think I probably saw pretty much all of the competitors at some stage or other, when they overtook me going at snail-pace. It was great to see smiles on so many people's faces when I pulled over to let them through. Most people were very courteous, although there were a few dodgy overtaking moves that nearly saw both of us off the track. I don't begrudge them though - the speedy whippets were in it for a different reason than me. I figured I'd just go out there and ride at a comfortable (?) pace for as long as I could. And yes, Tyno (Anthony Hawke) did laugh at me when I said I was going to do 12 laps - but he later explained that he thought I was going to wuss out on the night laps again... It was bloody awful watching him bomb out after all the effort he'd put into training - that was probably the only lowlight of the entire weekend. As well as the HR and cadence, I paid a lot more attention to food and water this year. I carbo loaded for the four days before the event, and had heaps of water, gatorade, carbo drink and glucose polymers during the race, as well as pasta for dinner. I think this probably made all the difference - I managed not to bonk or go seriously lactic or crampy for the whole event, which surprised me a lot. That said, the braking ruts were hell on the knees and lower back, and by Sunday morning I'd started scoffing ibuprofen and dreading the bumpy downhill sections. Definitely glad for the Rocket's suspension - nice and light for the climbs, no bobbing, and took out the worst of it. The pain from riding the first two years on a HT is unfortunately unforgettable. I loved the course (although perhaps not as much as the previous one), especially Dirty Dick and Backtrack. Barrelling down (by my definition, anyway!) Kuhmo walls was a blast! Didn't love Skyline, the first singletrack or the final bit of singletrack, mainly because of the bumps and my inability to maintain a decent rhythm - talk about snail pace. Thanks heaps to Pauly for being a great support crew, flashing ear and all, and to all the other mtb-oz listees who made the weekend such a fun one. I'll be back soloing next year, hopefully with better preparation to add some speed to the endurance. I'm totally in awe of Rosemary, Mel McIntyre and the other female soloists - definitely inspires me to push harder. Again, thanks to the organisers and all involved - another fantastic event. It was originally shown on SBS just after the race, but since most competitors would have been either travelling or sleeping, here it is to view at your pleasure. A 30 minute special on the race is in development as we speak, so look out for it in the coming months. PhotosImages by Paul Mirtschin/Cyclingnews
