Spink sets new course record for Mt Beauty point-to-point

The first round of the National MTB Series took off in the best possible way in Mt. Beauty yesterday with the staging of the annual Mitta to Mt. Beauty point to point race.

Just under 300 riders participated in a 55km race from the sleepy hamlet of Mitta to Mt. Beauty over a grueling course that included at least 4 climbs. The course was a mix of fire road and tarmac, and very untechnical, but despite this MTB riders prevailed.

The participation this year represented a 50% growth on last and is perhaps an indication of the popularity of this type of event. Very notable was the large numbers of riders in the Veteran (30 - 39), Master (40 - 49) and Super Master (50+) age categories in both male and female.

The race conditions were perfect, with a warm sunny day with a slight breeze to blow away the dust.

Murray Spink has now set the race record at 1hr 45m, close to 3m faster than the previous fastest time.

The 2002/2003 National MTB Series is a combined set of events that are run by both AMBA and MTBA for the first time in several years.

The next race in the series will be in the Hunter Valley (Killingworth) on the 10th November.
